Chef Geoff Lazlo has been cooking delicious locally sourced, elevated comfort food for years in Fairfield County. Connecticut diners will remember him from Bill Taibe’s The Whelk in Westport, and most recently from the very popular Mill Street in Greenwich, but he also spent time at both Gramercy Tavern and Blue Hill at Stone Barns. When I got on the phone with Lazlo last week to discuss his new chef driven gourmet food delivery service, I had to laugh when I asked “what’s going on chef?,” and he replied with “honestly I don’t even know anymore.” Restaurants and chefs across the state have had to be nimble and do some pivoting to stay relevant in the current pandemic economy, and Lazlo is no exception. “I’m always figuring out the next thing to do, and I’m always thinking about moving forward,” says Lazlo. That forward motion propelled him to launch Geoff Lazlo Food, serving Fairfield and Westchester Counties, and giving food-lovers the opportunity to enjoy hand-cooked meals in the comfort of their own homes.

“When I left Mill Street in 2018 I started a boutique catering company, says Lazlo, people kept saying ‘I really miss your food…how do I eat it at home?’ I had always wanted to do something a bit different from traditional catering services. My goal was to bring a restaurant quality culinary experience to the events I was hosting.” “I’ve never had pre-set menus online because I don’t want guests to fit into MY cookie cutter mold. I want to understand their needs.” When quarantine hit, Lazlo applied the same principal to creating a meal service that gave diners an opportunity to get fresh gourmet food, the food they had been asking for, delivered to their doorstep.

I was actually one of Geoff’s first customers back in March 2020. Trapped at home with three kids, and the seemingly constant looming question of “what’s for dinner Mom,” I jumped at the opportunity to try out Lazlo’s new service. What I appreciated about the menu was the nod to both parents who wanted a gorgeous fennel salad with beets and pistachios, and the children who preferred meatballs and polenta. Lazlo’s weekly delivery rapidly became one of the highlights of my week.

Now, Lazlo has expanded this service to allow guests to order online DAILY with morning and afternoon delivery options Monday through Friday. Delivery spots stay open until 10 p.m. for the following day, or until he sells out. A snapshot of any week’s menu includes a strong focus on locally sourced veggies and produce, either from his own vegetable garden, or from the farms in the CT/NY area. The menus are inspired by the seasons, and have a wonderful array of vegetable forward dishes (Lazlo has always given his vegetables the respect they deserve), alongside comfort food favorites. Lazlo’s current menu includes smoked beef brisket, three beef chili, roasted whole chicken, chicken pot pies, hearty vegan soups, and maple cornbread…to name a few. The delivery fee is $15, but when you factor in the commute from Greenwich, it’s a small price to pay for food delivered in high quality delivery bags.

In addition to Geoff Lazlo Foods delivery, Lazlo also has plans to open a brick and mortar retail space in Greenwich for Spring 2021. We will bring you more on this opening as the date gets closer nut guests can expect a gourmet country market meets high end deli. The new location will serve espresso, made to order sandwiches, custom salads, as well as functioning as a classic “appetizing shop” with smoked fish, whitefish spread and bagels. Lazlo wants diners to be able to grab a coffee and bagel in the morning, but also stock up on a whole chicken, roasted veggies and hummus to eat later for dinner, while they are waiting for their cup o’ joe. “Secretly the Jewish deli is my favorite food in the world,” says Lazlo. “I want to be a community hub,” Lazlo continues. We can look forward to more on this in early 2021.

To order Geoff Lazlo Foods, it’s as easy as going online, and clicking “add to cart.” Check out his menus here, and see for yourself what a chef driven home delivery service can do for your mental health (as the owner of the dinner meal). 5 days a week, Chef Lazlo can take this responsibility off your plate.
