Microcreamery of CT: Highlighting The Best of Connecticut's Ice Cream

Callie Weyers

Microcreamery of CT… Wait a minute, that's new. Did I get that right?

Yes, you heard that right. Microcreamery of CT has been serving the New Haven county community since 2022. Just recently, they opened the doors of a new location across from the Shell on South Main Street nestled right in downtown Cheshire.

The Microcreamery model arose from the owner Shahan Kukreja adapting the concept of a microbrewery,

“Instead of doing local beers, why don’t we do all the local ice cream so that I can kind of give people a tour of local ice creams”

Kukreja says. Featuring nearly 90 hand selected flavors compiled from local Connecticut ice cream makers such as Praline’s, Arethusa, and Big Dipper, Microcreamery of CT has options for everyone.

By having multiple companies to choose from, Microcreamery of CT is able to choose the best flavors from each company, as the owner mentioned,

“They all have their strengths and weaknesses, and the coolest thing about what we do is we get to cherry pick which ones we think are the best”.

Through incorporating six different Connecticut based companies, Microcreamery of CT is taking locally sourced to the next level. Every single flavor of the 80+ flavors is tasted before being offered to customers to ensure the utmost quality. When considering what companies to partner with the Kukreja’s prioritize longevity, “I think it says something about a business that’s been doing it for a long time at a high level. And that’s something you can trust and know that’s reliable and will be around for a long time” says Shahan Kukreja.

Their most popular flavor is Big Dipper’s Graham Jam which I got to try. It starts off with a graham cracker ice cream base with a graham cracker swirl and chocolate dipped honeycomb pieces. It was the perfect mix of rich, creamy ice cream with a little crunch from the honeycomb and graham cracker. Microcreamery of CT also recently began making a few flavors in house such as their mango and their Gulab Jamun which is an Indian dessert where donuts are soaked in a cardamom infused sugar honey syrup. In addition to dozens of unique flavors, they don’t skimp on options for those with dietary restrictions. Microcreamery of CT strives to have options for everyone whether that means sugar free, vegan, gluten free, dairy free or egg free, there will be something for you.

Before opening his Woodbridge location in 2022, Owner Shahan Kukreja grew up in the ice cream business, inspired by his father Dinesh Kukreja, who successfully opened multiple Praline’s ice cream locations. From a young age, Shahan grew a passion for ice cream and helped out at his fathers’ ice cream shops. After getting his MBA at Post University, Shahan wanted to start a business of his own, once he pitched the microcreamery idea, he was met with support from his father who entered as an investor and co-owner. Together they were able to build their customer base by getting involved in the community. Shahan urged the most important way to build a business is to be present at the storefront and engage with your community.

With three stores in less than three years, Microcreamery of CT has become a staple for New Haven county families. They continue to expand with the opening of their Chesire location almost two weeks ago, and the acquisition of their new mobile concession trailer which will be used for private events and festivals to increase their reach. According to Kukreja, the most crucial step to making a business successful is “to be front facing, you have to be here. Customers have to see your face. That’s how you build up relationships and you keep those customers coming back”.

You can find Microcreamery of CT at numerous CT events coming up including Pirate’s Day in Milford, Oyster Fest, The North Haven Food Fair, Tasting of CT, and his favorite of all Pizza Fest. “I rarely say no to anything. Even if I'm busy, I'll try to do it.” Kukreja says. This is a lesson Kukreja has learned from experience, he describes how you never know where a certain opportunity may take you and taking on extra events in the past has led him to acquiring loyal clients.

From ice cream nachos to affogatos, Microcreamery of CT has it all. They offer a welcoming environment for all age groups with plentiful seating indoors and outdoors. Customers can find board games and photo ops around every corner to keep them entertained while they enjoy a delicious scoop!
