This new modern Sichuan restaurant promises to go beyond “Americanized” Chinese food, showcasing the rich and complex flavors of the cuisine alongside stylish cocktails.

Sichuan Alley is new to West Hartford, but actually got its start in Singapore in 2016, said owner Michael Jiang, who partnered with the Singaporean owners to bring the concept to central Connecticut. It’s his first restaurant, he said, as he has a background in fashion, owning a business that makes formal dresses for weddings and proms.

Connecticut may not be home to an official Michelin Guide, but this new Chinese restaurant in New Haven has Bib Gourmand-approved hand-pulled noodles, soup dumplings and much more.

Kung Fu Kitchen recently celebrated its soft opening on Orange Street in the city’s Ninth Square neighborhood, marking the first Connecticut location of chef/owner Peter Song’s concept. Song opened the first Kung Fu in Manhattan to great fanfare a dozen years ago, adding additional city restaurants and outposts in Orlando and Boston.

Purple Potato Pizza in CT! Get Yours at E & D Pizza Company in Farmington Valley

Restaurant Pizza Avon Farmington Valley Homepage

Leeanne Griffin

Eleven years ago, Michael Androw was at a crossroads in his hospitality career. Getting his first taste of the industry making pizza at his grandparents’ Italian bakery in New London, he then worked in nearly every food and beverage setting as an adult: casual dining, fine dining and bars and nightclubs.

The most recent addition to the menu is borrowed from one of Androw’s friends and mentors, West Coast pizzaiolo Tony Gemignani. The World Pizza Cup champion, who owns several pizzerias in California and Nevada, created a purple potato pizza with a white base, with thinly-shaved vibrant violet spuds, bacon, pesto, feta and scallions. Androw loved it and asked Gemignani for his blessing to add it to the Avon menu.

Microcreamery of CT: Highlighting The Best of Connecticut's Ice Cream

Microcreamery of CT… Wait a minute, that's new. Did I get that right?

Yes, you heard that right. Microcreamery of CT has been serving the New Haven county community since 2022. Just recently, they opened the doors of a new location across from the Shell on South Main Street nestled right in downtown Cheshire.

The Microcreamery model arose from the owner Shahan Kukreja adapting the concept of a microbrewery,

“Instead of doing local beers, why don’t we do all the local ice cream so that I can kind of give people a tour of local ice creams”

Kukreja says. Featuring nearly 90 hand selected flavors compiled from local Connecticut companies such as Praline’s, Arethusa, and Big Dipper, Microcreamery of CT has options for everyone.

Guide To Mobile Cocktail Bars in Connecticut (2025 Edition)

For many of us, it’s hard to keep up with the constant change of fads and trends, but I think all of us can get on board with this one: mobile cocktail bars! While you’ve probably seen a few here and there over the years, Connecticut has really ramped up their traveling bar game and there are plenty to choose from. Plus, most travel throughout the state, so you don’t have to worry about lack of accessibility. They come in all different shapes and sizes, offer various alcoholic beverages (many include NA drinks and food too), and they service any event you might be hosting. From intimate groups to large gatherings, these mobile trucks (and their bartenders) are excited to cater a birthday bash, corporate lunch, fundraiser, or your next (and hopefully last?) wedding. While many crazes come and go, I sure hope this one is here to stay, because who doesn’t like a good boozy party with no need for a DD?

Papa's Pizza: Pie Perfection in Milford

Restaurant Milford Pizza Homepage

Jeff "jfood" Schlesinger

I love discovering places that get very little fanfare, are the heart and soul of the owner(s), and absolutely kill it. Papa’s Pizza in Milford is one of those places and is the epitome of a hole in the wall on the side of the road that deserves recognition for some killer pizza.

The original Papa’s Pizza is located closer to Walnut Beach versus downtown Milford (where Papa’s Pizza II is located), and I was getting a little nervous as the soccer ball at the end of the purple line on Waze was quickly approaching, and there was no sign of Papa’s. On my right there was a bakery, a breakfast joint and a parking lot. As I slowed to a crawl and stared into the lot (my apologies again to the people in the car behind me), the far section of the white building had two red words above a small window, “Papa’s Pizza.”

Elm in New Canaan: Phase 2.0 Features Renovations and Remixed Menu

Features Interview Restaurant Elm New Canaan New Canaan Luke Venner Homepage Interview Menu Update

Andrew Dominick

Chefs that have a bustling restaurant never take a full month off. For Luke Venner, “vacation” wasn’t pina coladas in the Caribbean, nor was it one of his fishing or hunting excursions. Instead, he was mostly in New Canaan, at Elm, remixing popular dishes, creating new ones, and reimagining and renovating the entire dining room. Don’t freak out. Your beloved Double-Double was unharmed in the process. But the dining room? Transformed. And it’s something that Venner—who’s in his 10th season as Elm’s executive chef and co-owner—has been meaning to tackle for quite a while. Talk to him about it and you can tell he’s feeling refreshed about all of it.

It’s A Woman’s World: Genee Habansky of Herbaceous Catering Co.

Ingredients Interview It's A Woman's World Caterer Catering Farm To Table Interview

Andrew Dominick

Since 2014, Genee Habansky’s Herbaceous Catering Co. has made the rounds all over. Catering, sure, but you’ve most likely come across her, if not at a private party, then it’s been at an event somewhere in Fairfield County (and beyond). If not there, then maybe you’ve picked up her food at the Westport Farmers Market where Herbaceous is a steady vendor. Habansky’s philosophy when it comes to her catering business is all about caring for the environment, plus, seasonality, locality, and super fresh as it pertains to ingredients she uses, something she became passionate about, first, at culinary school, then at Paul Newman’s The Dressing Room and her other stints at places like Pagano’s Seafood, Heirloom, Walrus + Carpenter, and Centro.

Menu Highlight: Kawa Ni in Westport Introduces "The Katsu Burger"

Ingredients Interview Restaurant Kawa Ni Westport Japanese Burger

Andrew Dominick

Chris Gonzalez is never surprised when people (including me) bring up Hapa Food Truck, specifically THAT burger. You know the one. Juicy grass-fed beef, a thick strip of tender pork belly, ultra caramelized onions, Vermont cheddar, lettuce and tomato, all between an eye catching purple ube bun. Admit it. You miss it. But those days are gone and these days are now. Gonzalez, now the chef at Kawa Ni, has, along with owner Bill Taibe, created another show stopper of a burger that’ll have you talking. That is, if you can get your hands on one.

No Mames Mexican Cantina Opens in Wethersfield With Tulum Vibes & Vibrant Flavors

Restaurant Opening Wethersfield Mexican Homepage

Leeanne Griffin

At No Mames, there are also no rules. The modern Mexican cantina by DORO Restaurant Group, which opened in Wethersfield April 30, is intended to be a fun escape with fresh flavors and beachy Tulum vibes.

No Mames (a Mexican slang phrase for “no way,” says executive chef and partner Ryan Van Grouw) opened this week on the Silas Deane Highway, in a shopping plaza between a Marshall’s and a pet supply store. Van Grouw says he wants guests to come in and “be blown away by the experience.”

“They’ll come in here after [shopping], not even realizing that we’re here, coming in to get tacos, and the next thing you know, they won’t know what hit them,” he said. “They walk in, the place is beautiful…everything is done with purpose, everything is done for a reason.”

The 120-seat restaurant’s decor is inspired by restaurants in coastal Tulum, with high ceilings and a breezy feel. A semi-open kitchen gives diners a glance at the work behind the scenes, as cooks press fresh tortillas, grill peppers and tend to a slowly rotating trompo, or vertical rotisserie, cooking a stack of marinated pork to be shaved for al pastor tacos.

Sushi Jin Opens In Downtown Westport: Outstanding Sushi & More

Restaurant Opening Sushi Sushi Bar Japanese Lunch Westport Homepage

Sam Schwab

Downtown Westport’s newest restaurant, Sushi Jin, has quickly become a hotspot. Located by the parking lot on Elm Street (across from Serena & Lily), Sushi Jin offers an expansive menu with authentic Japanese fare. The food is delicious and the decor is upscale, but the overall atmosphere is inviting. The space is long and narrow with options to sit at a standard table, an intimate booth, the bar, or sushi counter. Regardless of where you dine, you’ll immediately notice all of the decor details; the walls are lined with intricate wooden patterns, a Japanese technique called Kumiko, and the wood details are carried all the way to the ceilings.

The restaurant is run by a husband and wife duo, whom you’ll most likely spot while dining there —though they’re both very shy, so there’s a good chance they won’t introduce themselves as the owners. Their love story started around 20 years ago while they were both working at a restaurant in Flushing; he was in the kitchen and she was a server. As they were building out Sushi Jin, owner He Chen, kept a big surprise from his wife for several months: he named the restaurant “Jin” after her. Currently, the pair lives in Queens with plans to relocate closer soon.

CT Guide To Cinco De Mayo Events, Bars, Specials & Catering (2025 Edition)

Features Cinco de Mayo Homepage

Hannah Goodman

While Cinco de Mayo does fall on a Monday this year, there are still plenty of restaurants all throughout Connecticut that are offering holiday specials during the week leading up to May 5th and many that are excited to party the day of! I often try to look at the glass half full…full of margarita that is. So let’s all start the week off right by grabbing our friends, throwing on our dancing shoes for the live DJ performances, and proactively calling out of work that Tuesday, because yes, the tequila and beer will be flowing and that’s just a fact. But don’t worry, the tacos, empanadas, dips, and other incredible specials might just be so off the charts that you forget about the drinks and boom! Hangover cured!
