What's New at Walrus Alley: Honing in on Hospitality Features Restaurant Westport BBQ American CTbites Team December 05, 2020 Like so many local restaurants in 2020, Walrus Alley in Westport has had to make quite a few changes to adapt to the new scene. Outdoor dining has been expanded. Custom-made accented partitions have gone up indoors. Family-style meals have been added to the take out menu. But instead of focusing on these actionables individually, the team behind Walrus Alley has been looking at the big picture: hospitality and really tasty food.“When this all began, we realized we had to stop reacting and really bring our restaurant to its core,” said Angela Farrell of the Walrus team. “We didn’t want to just make more takeout options, we wanted to test our menu items and include reheat instructions to ensure the guest is getting the best experience, even at their home.”And man, they made it work. With cult favorites like the The Notorious PIG family pack feeding 4, (baby back ribs, pork shoulder, brisket, smoked turkey, mac + cheese, baked beans, collard greens, cornbread, coleslaw, house pickles ) and new crowd pleasers like the Mom What’s For Dinner, featuring a full dinner with adult entrees, kids meals, and family-friendly sides, they’ve found a way to help us forget the present and focus on a great meal. The Lila Rose Opens in Stamford: Sophisticated, Deliciously Playful, and a True Dining Experience Restaurant Tapas American Global Cuisine Cocktails Stamford Bar Brunch Homepage Breakfast Opening Jessica Ryan December 03, 2020 A couple of months ago John and Morgan Nealon (owners of the ever popular Taco Daddy) partnered up with Chef Mo Major, General Manager JJ Henao, and Mixologist Dave Cohade to create a restaurant experience like no other. This restaurant is The Lila Rose, a luxurious, sophisticated, whimsical and (I dare say) over-the-top restaurant. The interior, dressed entirely in shades of pink and gold, is distinctly feminine with a flirty vibe that’s sophisticated yet playful. The Lila Rose is a delicious feast for the eyes offering up so much exquisite detail, you can’t possibly take it all in.I had the opportunity to sample their menu a couple of weeks ago. With so few opportunities to “get away” these days, the Lila Rose fills that void, offering guests a truly memorable experience. This is the type of venue where you’ll want to slip into something more beautiful and we noticed that the guests thought so too. Read More
Barcelona Wine Bar Launches CONSERVA: Online Specialty Foods Shopping & Lifestyle Site Features Ingredients Website Shopping Online Store Specialty Market pantry Global Cuisine Online Shopping Homepage Opening Stephanie Webster December 01, 2020 It’s always exciting to see a company whose positioning in the marketplace you have loved and respected for years, launch a brand that is such a logical extension of their business, that you almost have to say, why didn’t they do this sooner? Sometimes it takes a pandemic to have the time and space to look into the soul of your business and ask, what’s next? Barcelona Wine Bar has done just that with the launch of their new online specialty foods shopping and lifestyle website, CONSERVA.What is CONSERVA? Quite literally, Conserva are foods that have been conserved or preserved (either packed in oil, vinegar, or pickled). Barcelona Partner, Adam Halberg, broke it down for us. “During the Spanish Civil War, when people didn’t have access to fresh foods, they invented canning to take the abundance from the coast and farms of Spain and package them in bulk. This was their war time pantry.” In current day Spain, “conserva” is considered a high end specialty product, and diners can find bars throughout Spain and Portugal that exclusively serve canned goods (with a side of Vermouth, of course). Adam continues, “In high end restaurants, the last page of a menu will often feature food that quite literally comes out of a tin…and they are often the most expensive thing on the menu.” Read More
EP Local Food Truck: Not a Jerk, But a Master of Spice Restaurant Food Truck Caribbean Take Out Homepage Kristin L. Wolfe November 29, 2020 From catering company and menu innovation to rolling through Connecticut with his farm to truck experience, EP Local, Chef Kevin O Neil and his wife and partner Patrice are always on the move. I first met the talented duo last year at an American Liver Foundation benefit (see feature here) and I was blown away with their exquisite use of spice, and absolutely gorgeous plating. I’ve been following Chef and his caribbean flare ever since. Now, several months into their new food truck venture, that flare is getting some attention. This week EP Food Truck used their wheels for an all important Thanksgiving Turkey Drive in collaboration with the YMCA and Sterling House Community Center in Stratford. And, you might have caught Chef on News 12 where he taught viewers how to make candied yams from the truck. Read More
Bailey’s Backyard is Making Wood-Fired Pizza....And It's Delicious Restaurant Features Ridgefield Pop-Up Pizza Homepage Andrew Dominick November 25, 2020 After celebrating 21 years of serving the freshest, local, seasonal menu they can come up with, Bailey’s Backyard is switching it up.Oh, don’t worry, one of Connecticut’s originators in farm-to-table fare will still be doing that.Sorry for the scare. I had to get your attention somehow, didn’t I?Bailey’s, however, is doing something new. They’re making pizza.Past all the outdoor seating that stretches from Bailey Avenue to an outdoor tent by the rear parking lot there’s a custom-made Forza Forni wood-fired oven burning at 800° or higher. In front of said oven you’ll find pizzaiolo Frank Candullo, who has been in the business for “about 15 years.” Along the way, Candullo has worked in a few parlors, including Victoria’s Wood Fired Pizzeria in Bethel and he has made countless pies in his own backyard for friends and family. How Candullo ended up slinging pies at Bailey’s is simple. He’s really tight with Bailey’s owner Sal Bagliavio.“Our kids went to school together and we became good friends,” Bagliavio says. “Frank has been making pizza in his backyard for years and he always has a bunch of us over. We’d joke around back in the day that we should open a pizza place together. In fact, I owned Alphonso’s in Danbury for 2-3 years before I opened Bailey’s.”Combine the “what ifs” with a pandemic and pizza became a reality. Bagliavio mentioned that after he had to close the restaurant for a few months and geared Bailey’s more towards takeout. Pizza, he said, was the perfect pandemic pivot to offer as a standalone or you can mix and match with Bailey’s dinner menu.To prepare, Bagliavio and Candullo did some serious dough research. “We spent two days at Forza Forni in Brewster perfecting the recipe,” Bagliavio says. “I think we ate like 75 pizzas!”The result of what they learned at Forza Forni is a dough made up of all-natural flour, water, salt, and yeast, free of any chemicals or additives. It’s then left to cold ferment for 48 hours. If you’re thinking wood-fired Neapolitan after Candullo is done spinning it, you’re half right. Bagliavio calls it a hybrid. “It’s like a cross between Neapolitan and New Haven,” he says. “It’s got a char, a thin crust, and a puffy edge. It’s light.” Read More

The team behind Taco Daddy and The Lila Rose, John Nealon and Morgan Machette are doing just that. With diminished dine in capacity, this duo, with the help of partner, Juan J Henao have expanded the reach of their new dinner spot, The Lila Rose, into an all day breakfast and lunch affair with their new, ‘Es Ok Cafe’.Located in Stamford’s Harbor Point area, The Lila Rose was already closed during the day, except for brunch on Saturday and Sundays, so it was the perfect spot to house the cafe that this group had dreamed of creating pre-Covid. “Machette, Henao (JJ), and his brother, Juan Camillo Henao, have always been passionate about coffee and tea, so putting the concept together has been really fun. I also just like saying Sexy Lattes and Slutty Paninis,” says co-owner Nealon. Read More
Connecticut CBD Shopping Guide: Where To Buy CBD Infused Edibles & More! Features Ingredients CBD Chocolate CBD Shopping Edibles Buying Guide Homepage April Guilbault November 20, 2020 The world of CBD, or cannabidiol, is a wide and wild one these days-it’s going full-tilt boogie and there’s lots to learn about and even more to try. Plenty of myths and misconceptions swirl around this product (yes, it’s derived from the hemp plant but no, it won’t get you high). There are tinctures and drops and capsules filled with the extract, but here for the CTbites crowd, we’re going to focus on the stuff you can EAT: gummies, chocolates, honey, and even drinks. Along with these products, what is really great about the companies and stores selling them is that they also offer a wealth of information and are happy to pass along their knowledge. After all, these products are being used for everything from aches and pains, to help getting a good night’s rest to helping quell anxiety (hello, 2020). This previously stigmatized arena is seeing a great up-tick in activity because it’s looking like there is a well-spring of beneficial possibilities. Organic Krush Opens in Westport With Healthy Organic Fast Casual Menu Restaurant Healthy Eats Juice Cleanse Juice Bar Organic Sustainable Acai Bowl Smoothies Bone Broth Breakfast Lunch Take Out Fast Casual Opening Stephanie Webster November 17, 2020 Organic Krush, with locations across Long Island, the Hamptons and Virginia, has just opened in Westport at 374 Post Road E. Organic Krush is a fast casual restaurant featuring healthy, organic menu, but cooked, juiced, and baked with a lot more love than your might expect from the average grab-n-go spot. The entire menu features ingredients that are 100% certified organic and free of GMOs, hormones, pesticides and really…fake anything. Diners seeking gluten-free, vegan or paleo options will be happy to discover that most of Organic Krush’s extensive menu works for them, and they can accommodate most dietary needs or restrictions. Organic Krush’s motto is “Eat Happy, Spread Love,” and although this is the seventh location for Co-Founders Michelle Walrath & Fran Paniccia, when I walked in just a few days before they opened their doors, the love and attention to every detail was clearly visible. From employee training and safety protocols to the consistency of the dishes coming out of the kitchen, Organic Krush made a strong debut. Open for three meals a day, from breakfast through dinner pick up at 8PM, I have a strong hunch that this will be a go-to spot for many in the Westport area who aren’t feeling like cooking but are seeking a healthy and tasty meal for their family. Chef April Bloomfield is Cooking at the Mayflower Inn Features Restaurant Fine Dining Washington Litchfield Mayflower Inn Lunch Celebrity Chef Homepage Andrew Dominick November 15, 2020 A posh five-star inn located in “the country” of Connecticut may be the last place you’d expect to stumble upon a former two-time Michelin star chef doing her thing in the kitchen.Expect it. And expect to run into April Bloomfield.Yeah, THAT April Bloomfield. The April Bloomfield who won a James Beard Foundation Award for Best Chef: New York City in 2014. The April Bloomfield who owns the British gastropub The Breslin. And the same April Bloomfield of the now shuttered, but acclaimed West Village haunt, The Spotted Pig.And since mid-September she’s been spending her time away from the concrete jungle as the chef-in-residence at the Mayflower Inn & Spa where she’s firing up the refined pub fare that she is so lauded for and marrying that style with the bounty from local farms. If you visit—and you absolutely should—there are a few dining experiences to be aware of.There’s a seasonal, constantly changing four-course dinner tasting in the brightly lit, plant enshrined Garden Room. The $150 tasting’s polar opposite has been the occasionally offered bonfire experience where Bloomfield comes out to chat over cocktails, savory snacks, and gooey s’mores. Then there’s the meal I elected to have, a lunch in The Tap Room. If the weather obeys, it’s a great idea to dine out on the back deck that overlooks the Shakespeare Garden, equal parts beautiful and haunting on an overcast autumn day. Read More

Soul Tasty Debuts Breakfast in Stamford: Great Soul Food And A Great Deal Restaurant Stamford Breakfast Soul Food Fried Chicken Andrew Dominick November 12, 2020 Soul Tasty, Stamford’s only soul food restaurant, is waking up before the sun rises to whip up their new breakfast menu that includes an array of omelets, breakfast sandwiches, French toast, and a few southern classics.Co-owner and chef Jean Gabriel teased Soul Tasty’s stick-to-your-ribs morning offerings with what’s arguably the star of the menu and an inevitable big seller, a fried chicken biscuit with a smattering of honey.“It’s a southern-style biscuit that’s butter basted throughout the cooking process, so you still get the flakiness, the buttery taste, and the softness,” Gabriel says. “We wanted to get the biscuit to the point where when you have anything with it, like when you bite into the crispy chicken, that it meshes well together for a contrast of textures.”As for the chicken part of the breakfast sandwich? It’s a boneless thigh, like the one Soul Tasty matches up with its chicken & waffles. Gabriel tells us that he marinates the thigh in a secret spice blend, allows it to sit, rotates it, flours it, eggs it, then dredges it again for a double crunch effect. Read More

Rosie New Canaan: 16 Years of Uber Delicious Global Comfort Food Restaurant New Canaan Global Cuisine American Baked Goods Comfort Food Mexican Dessert Breakfast Brunch Lunch homepage Homepage Stephanie Webster November 01, 2020 Walking in to meet the legendary “Rosie” of Rosie New Canaan, I had full clarity within 30 seconds as to what has made this uber delicious global comfort food spot so beloved for 16 years. Sure, it’s the 2 pound blueberry muffins that could make a grown man weep, and the love that goes into the 6 hour stewed black beans in Rosie’s hueveos rancheros, but truly it is Rosie Bonura herself that makes this place feel like home (but with far better fare than you’d find in your own kitchen). She herself is the perfect recipe of creative energy, passion, and love for her community. This New Canaan fixture, whom I came to realize, after sitting streetside with her, knows everyone in the town by name, came racing out of the kitchen to greet me (we’d never met in person), virtually hugged me, (cuz’ Covid), and said “I need to get a batch of cookies out of the oven, I’ll be right back.” Read More
