Meli Melo: A Taste of Paris in Greenwich

Restaurant French Greenwich Breakfast Lunch

r2d2

There aren’t too many places in Fairfield County I’m excited to go to when meeting a friend for lunch, but Meli Melo (French for ‘hodgepodge’) in Greenwich is one of the few places that always comes to mind. It is an authentic Parisian crêperie, serving both sweet and savory crêpes, luscious sandwiches, hearty salads, and a wide variety of soups… not to mention homemade ice cream, sorbet, and any combination of smoothie you could possibly conjure up.

A Better Tuna Sandwich

Ingredients

Nicole Straight

I picked up this Tonnino Yellowfin Tuna Fillets with Oregano during one of my frequent outings to our local Whole Foods. I must confess that I am not a big fan of the creamy tuna sandwich, but have always loved the Italian tuna packed in olive oil the way we ate it while in Positano many years ago. I was excited to find this brand of chunk tuna in extra virgin olive oil. Tonnino packages their product in glass jars to maintain the flavor of their premium tuna. It is a little more expensive than Chicken of the Sea, at about $6 a jar, but the flavor is worth every penny.

Isabelle et Vincent French Bakery...Ooh La La!

Restaurant Bakery Fairfield French Breakfast Dessert

Stephanie Webster

When I ask my children what treat they prefer, I used to hear only chants of ice cream... or rich frosted cupcakes. Since Isabelle et Vincent opened their seventh-generation patisserie and chocolate shop in Fairfield, I now hear pleading for croissants, brioche, mille-feuiiles, and chocolate eclairs.

In addition to the perfectly flakey, buttery pastry crust, and the melt in your mouth chocolate desserts, Isabelle et Vincent makes some of the best baguettes in the area. For $3.50, you can take home any variety of multi-grain, tomato-basil, onion-bacon, or the classic... that is if you can make it home without consuming the entire loaf in your car.

Village Gourmet-Chinese Food Done Right

Restaurant Chinese Norwalk

Pauline Rhoads

Photo Pauline RhoadsI’ve been going to Village Gourmet in Norwalk for years for what is hands down, the best Chinese food in the Westport/Norwalk area. Loyal customers have seen this local treasure tucked away in the Cranbury Shopping Center grow from a take-out place with a few small tables to a larger, full service restaurant that now serves wine and beer. I’ve tried it all, and it’s all exceptionally good. Here’s what to order:

The Robeks Tart-gasm

Restaurant Cos Cob Darien Fairfield Stamford healthy Dessert

Sarah Green

Photo: Stephanie WebsterFairfield County women have a little secret… and it isn’t sweet. Don’t tell, but hordes of us find time in our day to sneak into Robeks to experience our daily rapture. Simply, it’s Tart - paradise in a Styrofoam bowl. Plain, unadulterated ecstasy, this frozen treat at only 112 calories for a small (157 for a medium) is hardly sinful. It is delicious on its own but can be smothered in coconut, dappled with raspberry, sprinkled with chocolate chips, textured with granola, the choices are endless. But the slightly sour, wonderfully light, frozen indulgence is best on its wicked own.

Chef Shortcut: Try Chardonnay Smoked Salt

Ingredients Spices

I found this Chardonnay Smoked Fleur de Selin Whole Foods the other day. It's made by a company called India Tree, and has a distinct smoky smell and flavor making it the perfect seasoning for fish, chicken, or even freshly sauteed spinach with a squeeze of lemon juice. It's a great shortcut to a uniquely tasty meal.

Here is a great recipe for Cod that features this food find:
