"What The Market Means To The Community:" The Westport Farmers' Market Celebrates 20 Years

Features Ingredients Interview Events Westport Farmers Market Westport Farmers Market Farmers Interview Shop Local

Andrew Dominick

The word “community” has many different definitions and everyone’s personal definition of “community” differs. As it pertains to the Westport Farmers Market (or any farmers market for that matter), one of those definitions, “a sharing in common,” rings true. If you’ve taken a stroll through the WFM these past 20 years, whether it was at the market’s original location in the Westport Country Playhouse’s parking lot, or in the present at the Imperial Avenue lot, and in the winter at Gilbertie’s Herb Gardens, community, and connection, are noticeable all around.

The BIRDCODE Story: Meet the CT Based Founders Brandi & Phil Killoran (Part 1)

Features Interview Restaurant Birdcode Fried Chicken Fried Chicken Sandwich Fast Casual Interview Homepage

Andrew Dominick

About six years ago, fried chicken chains started popping up all over Connecticut. But amongst the Chick-fil-As, Popeyes, KFCs, and Dave’s Hot, our state has a few that have local roots. One of those, with seven locations, and growing, as of press time, is Birdcode. Founded in 2020 in West Hartford by the husband-and-wife duo of Phil and Brandi Killoran, Birdcode wasn’t then, still isn’t now, and it’ll very likely never follow in the footsteps of soulless fast casual franchises.

Flat Out Burger Expands from NYC to CT with Fairfield Location

The smash burger trend doesn’t seem to be slowing down anywhere. Especially not in Connecticut. Popping up all over the state, well after big chains like Five Guys and Shake Shack arrived on the scene, are smash burger spots, both independent ones, and micro chains. 7th Street Burger, which operates over 40 locations, just opened in New Haven, with another set to debut in Stamford in November 2026. The New Jersey-based Mashed Burger, a smaller chain that also serves Nashville hot chicken and churros, got into Stamford back in February. Also growing and recently making its entry into the Connecticut market is another Big Apple burger joint is Flat Out Burger, which started slinging crispy-edged, cheesy, saucy burgers at the busy corner of Grasmere Avenue and the Post Road on August 15.

It’s A Woman’s World: Vice President of Sales & Operations for the Connecticut Restaurant & Hospitality Association Yvette Tavares

Interview It's A Woman's World Interview Connecticut Restaurant & Hospitality Association

Andrew Dominick

For over 60 years, the Connecticut Restaurant & Hospitality Association (formerly the Connecticut Restaurant Association) has been and continues to lobby and advocate for the hospitality industry. In addition, they offer educational training like ServSafe (food safety certification), networking events to bring those in the industry together, and more. Serving on their small team of six is Yvette Tavares, the CRHA’s vice president of sales and operations, and someone I’ve personally known for at least a handful of years and counting. You’ve likely chatted with Yvette if you’ve ever been to a networking event that they’ve hosted and if you’ve been to their annual awards event, the CRAzies, you’ve seen her on stage as one of the show’s emcees.

Summer To-Do List! Max Chef to Farm Dinner Series at Rosedale Farm & Vineyard

OK…my bad. I’m truly embarrassed to say, (and filled with regret) that Max Chef to Farm dinner series launched in 2009, and I just FINALLY made it to one of these events this past week. The series is a partnership between Max Catering & Events and Rosedale Farms & Vineyards in Simsbury, CT.

Driving up to Simsbury, through lush fields, is delightful, but turning into Rosedale’s farm, and following the road back through the vineyards to the elegant tent resting between the vines, is truly a treat. The Max Hospitality team are industry pros and their Culinary Director and Managing Partner of Max Catering & Events: Hunter Morton alongside Max Chef to Farm Executive Chef Steven Michalewicz, delivered a meal that was perhaps, one of my favorites of 2026.

Silvermine Coffee Roasters Opens in Norwalk with Unique Beans From Across the Globe

The smell of freshly roasted coffee greets customers as they step into Silvermine Coffee Roasters in Norwalk. Behind each cup is more than carefully sourced beans- it’s years of experimentation, craftsmanship, and a desire to showcase the unique story each coffee bean has to tell. What began as frustration with bad coffee has evolved into one of Fairfield County's most distinctive specialty coffee roasters, offering nearly 30 carefully crafted blends from around the world.

For owner Thomas Morsanutto, coffee roasting was never part of the original plan. While working at a financial technology company in Wilton, he grew frustrated with the quality of coffee available in the office and began coffee roasting himself.

“I spent hours roasting coffee for friends and family, but eventually it just wasn't sustainable. I decided to take a chance and build a real business that focused on takeout coffee, coffee beans, and online sales. We wanted a concept that could succeed even if people weren't gathering into a cafe,” Morsanutto said.

Taking over the space (and some of the spirit) occupied for the past nine years by The Dilly Duck Shop is Chez Jack, where they’re doing breakfast, coffee, artisan sandwiches, and an authentic poutine, because there is a Quebecoise vibe scattered about the menu. The “Jack” in Chez Jack is Jacques Talbot, a successful veteran chef and restaurateur behind the Cosmos restaurants (or resto-lounges) in Quebec City.

Andrew Dominick

Thirty years ago, in the mid-90s, 1996, to be precise, South Norwalk’s restaurant scene started to see some buzz. Many would argue that the spot that sparked it all was Barcelona Wine Bar and all it brought with it. The tapas, the vino, and certainly when people danced on the bar top. In the present, Barcelona has grown significantly, so much so that they’ve ALMOST got one location for every year they’ve been a restaurant and a company. To date, there are 24 of ‘em across 12 different states, including four in Connecticut, where their growth first began.

Very quietly, in the sleepy town of Pound Ridge, there’s a tiny sourdough bakery that started a pizza program that’s grown into something that locals, and even Martha Stewart, is abuzz about. At 123Dough—where the small team bakes sourdough bread, pastries, and even makes sourdough pasta and ramen noodles—baker Paul Park started messing around with pizza dough, first at home, then at the bakery, and has seen the program really take off.

Fizz Social Soda: CT Based THC- Infused Soda

Features THC Seltzer THC Cannabis Beverage

Valentina Baldini

The familiar taste of a soda now comes with a new twist in Connecticut. Instead of alcohol or caffeine, Fizz Social Soda offers low-dose THC-infused beverages designed to introduce consumers to cannabis in a more approachable way. What began as years of experience in the medical cannabis industry has grown into Connecticut's first locally produced THC soda brand, offering infused drinks in nostalgic flavors while helping reshape how people think about cannabis.

Founder Julien Debelle Duplan was inspired to create Fizz Social Soda after seeing the positive impact cannabis had on people’s lives.

Launched in November 2025, Fizz Social Soda is Connecticut's first locally produced THC soda. Each can contains 3 milligrams of THC, a lower dose than the standard 5-milligram serving found in many cannabis edibles. Currently, flavors include Lemon Lime, Orange, Black Cherry and Diet Cola. The original flavors are made with cane sugar instead of high-fructose corn syrup, while the Diet Cola contains zero calories and zero sugar.

Ginkgo in Fairfield: Serving Authentic Sichuan Cuisine for Nearly 10 Years

Andrew Dominick

It’s midday on a Thursday. I’m at Ginkgo Sichuan Cuisine and I’m set to interview co-owner Yingying Yan over a handful of her restaurant’s dishes. And out they all come. I can see and I can certainly smell the dry red chilies before they hit the table. I go straight for the handmade dumplings and give it a stir do the spicy reddish orange oil and freshly diced garlic coats each little pork filled pocket. I pop one in my mouth, then immediately take a forkful of crispy edged cumin beef. I cough a few times and probably turned a few shades of red as I felt my temperature rise. This, by the way, isn’t a bad thing. Yan’s husband, and co-owner, Roger Yen, tells me to skip the water. He brings over an ice-cold bottle of Tsingtao, a light, refreshing rice lager that calmed the heat, the numbness in my tongue, and my slight cough that was a result of simply underestimating the heat level.

Summertime in Europe means walking along the Seine, swimming in the Cinque Terre, and enjoying all the pastries and chocolate Europe has to offer. But, if you're like me and staying stateside this season, lucky for you, we've got Europe at home.

At DoChéri in Darien, you'll find a Parisian-inspired interior and French-style chocolates infused with Ukrainian artistry. Founded by Maryna Steadman, DoChéri opened just a few months ago and is quickly becoming everyone's summer bucket-list stop.

Chocolate wasn't always Maryna's dream. Eight years ago, she was living in Ukraine and working in finance, spending more than a decade building a career in banking. But after moving to the United States, a new country ignited a new question: What can I do that I really love?

At the end of March, the Reyes Family announced that Mariposa Taqueria would be closing after six years on Mill Plain Road. Technically, though, they weren’t going anywhere. Instead, they decided to change it over to one of their other long-standing concepts in the city of Danbury. Not Amigo’s Deli. Not Mezon Tapas Bar, which was previously in the Mariposa space. But rather, a second, slightly different iteration of Minas Carne Brazilian Barbecue called Minas Carne Brazilian BBQ & Bar.

Well, folks, the latter is here, and if you missed the rooftop that was formerly part of Evarito’s, it’s back, and it’s totally reimagined.
