The second Connecticut location for Bareburger, in Harbor Point, is due to open on December 21st, as the micro-chain-gone-global expands its Connecticut offerings.

Bareburger started in 2009…after receiving rave reviews preparing hamburgers in the kitchen of Sputnik, an underground music haunt in Brooklyn, Euripides Pelekanos founded Bareburger in an Astoria, Queens’ storefront. After bringing his winning formula to thirteen additional NYC locations, Bareburger launched its first location in Ridgefield in 2013 and is now ready to launch its second, Stamford, location.

In an exclusive interview with CTbites, Pelekanos explained his philosophy and vision as Bareburger first expanded from its single Astoria location into a global chain. “I want all of my products to be organic or as close to organic as possible. From the meat to the toppings to the salads, I want natural or organic; that is my personal preference; that is what I eat.”

Breaking News: Fortina in Stamford Opening This Week

Restaurant Italian Openings Pizza Stamford Lunch

Lou Gorfain

Grazie a Dio. The long wait (and drive to Westchester) is over.  Fortina is ready to rock in Stamford’s  Harbor Point.   Luigi Bianco Pizza, welcome to Connecticut!

Expecting to begin serving any day (as soon as they get their Certificate of Occupancy),  partners John Nealon,  Christian Petroni, and Rob Krauss invited CTBites to stop by for a sneak peek before the official opening.

Actually that debut won’t be so formal.  Nothing soft.   No Friends and Family.  Not even a ribbon cutting.  Just a sigh of relief.  “When we open the doors, we’re open,”  Nealon told us.

That’s because everything is set, the menu (almost identical to Armonk), the staff (many from Rye Brook and Armonk),   the kitchen (the same wood fired ovens from Naples and charcoal grill from Spain) the playlist (specialized  for Stamford’s millennials and empty nesters),  and yes,  hundreds of those familiar San Marzano cans just waiting to boost their pizza trays with a luscious Luigi Bianco.   The whimsy is waiting.

Boothbay Lobster Company Truck Rolls into Stamford's Harbor Point

Restaurant Food Truck Lobster Seafood Stamford

Jeff "jfood" Schlesinger

Boothbay Lobster Company is opening its first bricks and mortar location at Harbor Point in Stamford in the upcoming months. To give the community a taste of what to expect from super-fresh Maine lobster, the company is periodically parking its Boothbay Lobster Company truck 100 yards down the street from the restaurant, serving two types of Lobster Rolls, a BLC sandwich, Lobster Mac & Cheese, plus a few non-lobster items. On a beautiful afternoon CTbites visited the truck to sample the newest addition to the Harbor Point neighborhood. As I approached the truck I noticed a sign stating that the lobster were caught the previous day…this was an ultra-fresh product.

The Fez in Stamford Re-Opens w/ Expanded Bar, Menu & Music Space

Restaurant Live Music Middle Eastern Stamford Bar

Emma Jane-Doody Stetson

New York chic meets laid back cool at The Fez, a Middle Eastern eatery located in Stamford.  The restaurant, located on Summer Street, is unobtrusive from the outside.  The inside, however, is alive!  Wine flows and aromatic Mediterranean cuisine comes out of the kitchen.  Patrons flock to hear live music and conversation echoes throughout the intimate space.

On June 1, 2015, the Fez shut its doors to undergo a renovation.  After a few busy months, they are proud to announce their grand reopening.  Lunch and dinner service has resumed, as well as live music.

The same team behind the original Fez will see it into its new age.  Greenwich native Eric Monte, who has a self-professed “love of food and wine,” partnered with Jay Patel, who comes from a family of restaurateurs.  Chef Shelby prepares the delicious cuisine.  Originally Monte had hired a French chef, but Chef Shelby and his Indian background wound up being the perfect match for the restaurant.  Fred Laist manages the business aspect.  He has a rich history in corporate catering and Monte calls him “brilliant in food service.”

Teff Ethiopian & Eritrean Restaurant Opens in Stamford

Restaurant Ethiopian Specialty Market Stamford Lunch

Emma Jane-Doody Stetson

As children, we’re instructed not to eat with our hands.  But at Teff, a newly opened Ethiopian and Eritrean restaurant in Stamford, CT, you’re supposed to do just that.

On the brink of Harborview and a stone’s throw away from downtown, Teff’s location is ideal.  It sits in the space that formerly housed the Red Sea Deli.  The Mekonen family owned the deli for 14 years.  Although they mainly served classic American fare there, they offered Ethiopian food from Thursday-Saturday.

“We had good reception, people wanted it, but it was time consuming,” says Elsa Mekonen, Teff’s operations manager.  “We thought it would be good to have a full time Ethiopian restaurant.”

The concept led to the creation of Teff, which officially opened for business on July 30.

Hadas Mekonen, matriarch and chef, grew up in Eritrea, a small country that used to be part of Ethiopia.  She was the third oldest in a family of 16, so learning how to cook was essential to help provide for the family.  At age 9 she started observing how her mother browned and prepared the spices.  From there, she learned how to cook entire dishes.

CTbites writer, Jessica Ryan, recently attended a press dinner at Table 104 Osteria & Bar in Stamford. Here are her tasting notes.

Tucked away unassumingly on Long Ridge Road, this unpretentious restaurant offers exceptional fare. Together Chef Domenico Iovieno, Restaurateur Walter Cappelli and Chef and Restaurateur Enzo Bruno have teamed up to produce a restaurant that is vibrant, inviting, spacious and modern.

Table 104 Osteria & Bar offers a creative menu featuring fresh, cooked from the heart comfort food with notable inspirations from Rome and the Italian coastline.

Aarón Sánchez & Chris Batemen Unveil Seasonal Menu At Paloma, Stamford

Restaurant Celebrity Chef Stamford Lunch Latin American

Lou Gorfain

After a bloggers’ tasting at Paloma in Stamford’s Harbor Point, CTBites sat down with Chef de Cuisine Chris Bateman to review the menu -- and his creative relationship with celebrity chef-owner Aarón Sánchez.

Bateman is a culinary prodigy. Fresh from CIA, the young chef opened Four Seasons Restaurants and Hotels around the world. So debuting Paloma last summer wasn’t his first big time rodeo. Sánchez may be its star, but Bateman runs the day-to-day show.

We wondered how much the celeb is involved in the creation of Paloma’s menu. “Very much,” Bateman replies. “We work closely. But he’s wide open to my ideas, and listens really well.”   The unshaven, still youthful chef, sporting jeans and a Yankee cap worn backwards, confides, “Aarón is the reason I’ve stayed here.  I love cooking with him.”

Boothbay Lobster Company Opening in Stamford's Harbor Point: Wicked Fresh Maine Seafood

Restaurant Openings Seafood Stamford

Lou Gorfain

It’s official.  The Boothbay Lobster Company will be opening its first restaurant in early 2016 at Harbor Point in Stamford. In fact, owner David Galin had just finished hanging up the announcement sign in the window of the new location, when we asked about his plans.

Since Boothbay is Lobster Haven in Maine, our first question had to be, “Connecticut Lobster Roll or New England Lobster Roll?”

“Both,” Galin said, grinning.  “And either way, we’ll serve tail, knuckle and claw meat in a really good bun.”

The restaurant concept is so fresh that Galin and his somewhat silent business partner are still refining the details, but “fresh” is the operant theme:  seafood plucked directly from the cold waters of Maine immediately trucked to Harbor Point.

When the concept is further embellished, Galin promised to give CTBites readers a very early preview.

This we can leak.

The Beer Garden @ Shippan Landing Re-Opens May 21 For The Summer Season in Stamford

Restaurant Beer Garden CT Beer Happy Hour Stamford Beer Bar

Imian Partners will open The Beer Garden at Shippan Landing for its second season on May 21st.  Imian first introduced the pop-up beer garden concept two summers ago with The Beer Garden at Harbor Point and is credited for invigorating the social scene in Stamford’s South End.  The Shippan spot has a significantly more relaxed vibe than that of Harbor Point, but has all the charm and beauty of the perfect summer hangout.

With unobstructed waterfront views, (and the best seat in town to watch the sunset all summer long), The Beer Garden at Shippan Landing will showcase and rotate its carefully curated list of local craft beers on draft and in cans offering a variety of options. Look for favorites such as Half Full, Broad Brook, Captain Lawrence and more. We also hear that The Beer Garden will be partnering with Half Full to create a signature beer just for the garden. Pretty cool.

An impressive rotating lineup of the area’s best food trucks will also be part of the nightly festivities at the Beer Garden. Stay tuned for details on some of your favorite mobile eats.

The family-friendly environment will include outdoor games such as life-size jenga, corn hole, can jam and beer pong. Entertainment will include live music and special themed-events throughout the summer beginning on Sunday May 24th with a Memorial Day party.

Brunch Menu Launches @ Barcelona Fairfield, Stamford & West Hartford

Restaurant Brunch Fairfield Spanish Stamford West Hartford Breakfast

Stephanie Webster

Who doesn’t love brunch? Sleepy weekend diners can conveniently avoid their own kitchens while enjoying an often decadent and relaxed morning meal. Plus, as a bonus, brunch is often accompanied by a well crafted cocktail. For this reason, we were pleased to hear that Barcelona Wine Bar has launched brunch service every Saturday and Sunday at several of their locations, including West Hartford, Stamford, and now Fairfield. As each Barcelona menu highlights the vision of their executive chef, brunch menus will vary slightly based on style, but bear a similar theme. To investigate this new kid on the brunch block, we decided to visit Chef Darren Carbone, who recently took over the Barcelona Fairfield kitchen, and who brings to the table, a little Latin flair.

In looking at the new Brunch menu, it’s difficult not to get just a little bit excited. Entrées such as Duck Confit Hash, Chocolate and Dulce de Leche French Toast, and a Breakfast “Coca,” (grilled bread, mushrooms, egg and Sriracha), sound like solid reasons to get out of bed.

Magee's Curbside: Must Try Breakfast & Lunch in Stamford!

Restaurant Delicious Dives Stamford Breakfast Lunch

Douglas P Clement

I get this tip that the new place to go for the best casual breakfast and lunch food in Stamford is a small spot at 72 Magee Ave., in the “no-man’s zone” south of I-95 and the Metro-North tracks. On the way to Greenwich one morning I decide to investigate Magee's Curbside.

Here’s the bottom line in an anecdote:

After I show up and rattle the staff by asking them to make a few dishes I can sample and photograph—and ask if the owners are around—I’m sitting at a table talking to co-owners Danny DeGruttola (owner of The Brickhouse Bar & Grill on Bedford Street) and Evan Philippopoulos. A woman comes in and declares that she’s back after Magee’s delighted her with the best turkey burger she’s ever had. (The house-recipe burger was a recent special.)

No, the woman wasn’t a ringer; no one knew I was coming and the owners of the small, bright and cheerful place weren’t even supposed to be there—the food just is that terrific.

Amore Cucina & Bar Opens in Stamford w/ World Pizza Champion at Helm

Restaurant Italian Pizza Stamford Take Out

Jessica Ryan

I recently had the opportunity to visit the newly redesigned Amore Cucina & Bar on Hope Street in Stamford for a blogger dinner.

The restaurant interior boasts a warm rustic atmosphere with its combination of exposed brick and distressed wood. The large bar area accommodates thirty people and offers a well thought out wine list with a concentration on Italian varietals, creative cocktails and craft beer. Sixty seats are set up in a casual trattoria style, and during warmer weather a large patio will welcome diners.

The real news here is Owner Bruno DiFabio, a six-time World Pizza Champion, Restaurateur and Television Personality. With eleven restaurants in the US and new ones scheduled to open in London, I assure you that he knows pizza.

Here’s some great news for residents of downtown Stamford…

DiMare Pastry Shop has announced that it will open its third location at 30 Spring Street in Stamford, serving its delicious cakes, pies, cupcakes, pastries, rolls, breads and its ever-popular and outrageous cannoli dip. The location will be named DiMare Pastry Downtown and is convenient to the explosion of apartments in downtown Stamford along Washington, Atlantic and Bedford.

The newest location on Spring Street will be familiar for patrons of Bar Rosso and Volta as DiMare becomes the third occupant in this storefront. The interior design is currently in the planning and development phase and the artist rendering on their Facebook page (above) indicates a sleek design to showcase their outstanding baked goods. Thanks to OmNomCT for confirming the details.

Soosh Sushi Opens on Summer Street in Stamford (And It's Kosher!)

Restaurant Japanese Kosher Stamford Sushi

Jessica Ryan

The best places, I believe, are the more unassuming places. The little treasures that are off the beaten path, hidden away where you least expect. The best food is the food that is what it is – unpretentious, fresh and bursting with flavor. And that’s the best way to describe this new unassuming little Japanese restaurant in Stamford, Soosh.

It was a social media friend of mine, Pierre-Christian D. Frye, owner of PCDF Architecture in Greenwich, who first told me about Soosh. Perhaps he was a bit biased as he was hired as the restaurant’s architect. He explained how he turned what was basically an old storage space into a stylish Japanese eatery.

“For the new Soosh restaurant I worked closely with the owner to bring the vision to life of a truly modern, timeless dining experience. I accentuated the compact space with unique lighting and a rich mix of textures, tiles, wood and metal.

The Rosie O Sandwich @ Reddi Rooster in Stamford

Restaurant Delicious Dives Stamford Breakfast Comfort Food Kid Friendly

Jeff "jfood" Schlesinger

Breakfast of Champions? The "Rosie O" at Reddi Rooster in Stamford may not qualify for this title or as a healthy start to the day, but when you want a diversion from the granola, the yogurt, the egg white omelet, the fresh fruit and throw calorie count to the wind, this sandwich is a great choice.

Reddi Rooster is located on Route 1 on the east side of Stamford near the Darien border. It is a fairly non-descript roadside luncheonette serving sandwiches, wraps, and a few hot dishes. The Rosie O has garnered some positive press as one of the best breakfast sandwiches in area so when I found myself in the area I decided to stop in and see for myself. It is available on a roll for $4.50 or as a wedge or a wrap for $7. I ordered the roll version and grabbed one of the seven stools. A steady stream of guests entered, ordered and waited, always a good sign…locals know.
