With summer coming to a close, it may be hard to look forward to, well, just about anything. While seasons will come and go, we stand strong in guaranteeing fun ways for members of our Connecticut community to ease in and out of every season. Soon, random pumpkins and squash will be showing up everywhere – on porch steps, in “fun” seasonal lattes, and on restaurant menus. Though we may not have complete control over the fads and trends that are destined to rule our fall and winter and the holidays that come with said seasons, we do have the ability as sentient beings to choose how to spend these imminent days. Below you’ll find many local businesses and restaurants that are offering cooking and baking classes for adults and children, all of which will further your culinary education. They’ll allow you to hone the skills you dare whip out on Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, or Christmas…the techniques you swear you have, whether it's to impress your in-laws or hold over your kids heads all year as a form of weaponized guilt (another skill parents have). Whatever the case may be, allow this list to fuel those fires within and get to accomplishing what is truly important: eating good food with good people.
The Connecticut Restaurant Association and ProStart are training high school kids for culinary careers…and you can help support these programs by eating out THIS WEEK! Through March 9th, dine out to support ProStart students through ProStart Week. Round up, or donate $10 to get $10, and directly support the next generation of industry professionals.
ProStart is the two-year career-building program for high school students. Whether students are looking to enter the job market directly after graduating, or if they plan to attend college, a ProStart graduate makes a solid candidate for success.

In various rankings online, stuffing generally comes in first place on the Top 10 list of Thanksgiving foods. I personally cannot argue with that for one hot second. Chef Jamie Bordonaro’s “day” job is Sous Chef at Millwrights Restaurant in Simsbury Connecticut, but over the past six years, Bordonaro has been working on a project of his own, in all of that “free” time one has as a chef. Jamie recently finished the publication of a cookbook titled, “Pursuit of Passion,” and as you can imagine, he is more than a little excited to finally be able to share the fruits of his labor with the public.
The cookbook is a personal narrative and compilation of Bordonaro’s cooking techniques, flavor profiles, and skills that he acquired throughout his culinary career. But it is so much more than that, and is grounded in purpose that relates to one’s own inner drive and the importance of creating opportunity within yourself to follow your passion.
Chef Silvia Baldini of Strawberry & Sage has released a wonderful new E-cookbook, “Room at the Table; Recipes from the Heart.” The cookbook is a collection of family recipes donated by ‘New Canaan Democrats’ members, friends, community leaders, and legislators. It’s a cookbook about the joy and benefits of sharing delicious meals with others. It is also about building a bigger table that welcomes and includes our friends and neighbors, embraces our diversities, and celebrates our expansive attitudes and values of compassion and care for everyone.
Contributors to the project include: Senator Kamala Harris—vice-presidential candidate, Chef Marcus Samuelsson— award-winning chef, restaurateur, cookbook author, philanthropist and food activist, judge on Chopped, Gloria Steinem— Activist, author, Feminist…and oh so many more.
