In a world of commercial food production and global supply chains, many people are looking for a more sustainable, local, and community-driven alternative to sourcing their food. Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs connect local farmers with their neighboring consumers in a mutually beneficial relationship that fosters a stronger connection between people and their food.

In a traditional CSA program, members become shareholders of the farm. They purchase a subscription or "share" in late winter or early spring, providing farmers with upfront financial support. In return, during harvest season, members receive regular distributions of fresh, seasonal produce, or other farm products like eggs, dairy, or meat, depending on the farm’s offerings. Some farms offer a more flexible CSA program that runs like an on-site credit, where members can choose their own products at the farm stand.

Either system assists small-scale agricultural businesses financially by ensuring them a stable income and reducing their risk. In partnering with the farm, members gain access to the freshest produce and other farm products possible, get to know their local growers, and are able connect in a mindful way to where and how their food is grown. CSAs encourage sustainable agricultural practices, foster a sense of community, and help the local economy.

Bridgeport’s not-for-profit Green Village Initiative was founded in Westport in 2011. Several years later the decision was made to move GVI’s base of operations and programs to focus on the residents of Bridgeport, CT and has since incorporated values of racial equity, antiracism and food justice into its goals. The GVI runs three programs which consist of community gardens, youth leadership programs and The Reservoir Community Farm, a 1.7 acre educational farm in the heart of Bridgeport with over 47 plots for community gardeners to grow food for their families.

We had the opportunity to meet Eileen O’Reilly, who serves as a volunteer Board of Director as Chair of the Board. The former New Yorker and Vogue Magazine editor, told us all about the Green Village Initiative as we toured the farm on a warm day in late September. We wandered through rows of fruit, vegetables and flowers all being tended to by community members, as well as rows of wilder plants and greens with butterflies fluttering over the brightly colored flora and bees busily pollinating, their legs covered in brightly colored yellow dust.

It’s summer, which means it’s time to head to your local farm for some fruit picking! It doesn’t get fresher than picking your own fruit straight from the source, especially when they’re in season! Organized by county, the following farms have at least one type of seasonal fruit available during the year as a pick-your-own experience.

Note that the following fruit harvest seasons are approximate as it varies from year to year depending on a number of factors, including weather. With the warm temperatures we’re seeing this June, some picking seasons may move along faster than usual. This means strawberry season could wrap up early, but blueberries and raspberries could start early, too. Check with the farm you wish to visit to confirm current fruit availability.

Here is an approximation for some of the more popular fruits you may want to pick this year.

Do you fancy a pleasant drive through some of Connecticut’s prettiest countryside to visit a classic, 19th-century, New England country inn on whose terrace or porch you can revel in an idyllic lake view and delicious European cuisine? Then the Hopkins Inn overlooking Lake Waramaug in the Litchfield Hills is definitely for you.

The Hopkins Inn has been in operation since 1847. Franz and Beth Schober have owned and operated the inn for over 40 years, while their son, Toby Fossland, who grew up at the inn, has worked alongside them since 1991. The inn is normally open year-round, its restaurant from late March through January 1. The Hopkins Inn is not affiliated, but appears to enjoy neighborly relations, with Hopkins Vineyard located across the road, the two attractions undoubtedly complementing each other.
