Sound Coffee Opens in Black Rock: Ethically Sourced, Freshly Roasted Coffee
Sound Coffee, known for their freshly roasted, ethically sourced beans, threw its grand opening at its Black Rock location in Bridgeport earlier this month after completing a full renovation. Since 2023, they’ve been serving the Bridgeport community from their cozy cafe at their roastery on Main Street– now, they’re excited to welcome even more coffee lovers with the opening of their new spacious cafe on Fairfield Avenue
Sound Coffee is run by husband and wife, Jeff and Sarah Roy, who were inspired to showcase their passion for quality coffee after honing their roasting skills at home. Their journey began when Jeff received a simple Christmas gift of a roasting at home coffee kit from his mother in law. In 2020 the Roy’s began roasting and selling out of their garage to neighbors and farmers markets before opening their first location on Main Street in Bridgeport.
Sound Coffee was named after three principles: being near the Long Island Sound, being environmentally sound, and relating to music as you can see in their design choices at their new cafe. According to owner Jeff Roy
“Not only when we source our beans are we looking for farmers who take care of the earth. We’re also looking for farmers that pay their workers fairly”
The Fairfield Ave location Sound Coffee resides in now has been a coffee shop for over 13 years, shifting between different owners. Before their recent grand opening, the shop went under a full renovation. They kept the local coffee shop charm while adding in some aspects from their brand such as a wall of empty coffee bags and music elements such as their wall of CD’s. As Roy states,
“we wanted to pay homage to the people who came before us and be the great next stewards of the space, but we also wanted to incorporate the elements of our brand”.
When I visited I was able to test out a few of their specialty drinks. First I tried their Blood Orange Spritzer which consists of their house made blood orange syrup with tonic water and a double shot of espresso. If you like your drinks carbonated and want to try something unique, definitely try this out. I then tried their earl grey matcha which was a nice combination of smooth matcha and a touch of herbal early grey. To finish it off, I tried an unreleased special which was a cardamom cold foam cold brew which was perfectly paired with one of their swirled pastries. The quality and care that goes into their drinks is evident with their strong yet balanced brews.
If you ever find yourself at the Bridgeport Amphitheater, Sound Coffee has a mobile coffee cart that can be found there more often than not, when not hired for private events. On top of their numerous delightful drinks on their cafe menu, you can also choose from over eight varieties of freshly roasted coffee blends to take home and brew yourself.
Whether in the Black Rock area or at the amphitheater for an event, Sound Coffee is there if you’re in need of a quick pick me up or even a relaxing place to get work done. The Roy’s put a modern twist on the classic local coffee shop with an inviting atmosphere.
