For many people, Ralph’s Famous Italian Ices & Ice Cream, represents a little piece of their childhood.  I will confess to a few nostalgic moments around this shaved ice mecca. And now a bit of good news in the tidal wave of horror, Ralph’s Famous Italian Ices is opening a location in Connecticut…Stamford to be exact, at 900 High Ridge Road.

Ralph’s has been around since 1928 when Italian immigrant Ralph Silvestro started selling “ water ice” around Staten Island. If you are familiar with the semi-frozen Italian dessert, granita, Ralph’s water ice is a bit like this Sicilian favorite.

What’s all the fuss over Ralph’s Famous ices? (And let’s not forget the ice cream and epic sherbets, although, let’s be real…it’s all about the ices.) In “water ice", “ the water is frozen into very small ice crystals and mixed with sugar and flavoring, close to 35 flavors from which to choose. The texture is not at all snow-cone, but rather smooth and pleasing, much like a soft sorbet.

And yes, they do sell more than just ices. There is soft serve, hard packed ice cream, sundaes, and fat free frozen treats. There is also a new item on the menu I have yet to experience, the “RALPHIE
SANDWICH,”
described on their website as “a light, crispy, and warm Belgian waffle ice cream sandwich drizzled with raspberry, chocolate, or pancake sauce.” You had me at “pancake sauce.”
