BFF with BSF (Burgers, Shakes, & Fries) in Greenwich

Just off I-95 in one of Greenwich’s grittier, but up-and-coming ‘hoods," Burgers, Shakes & Fries (BSF) is just so cool.  It’s fast, funky, fresh and affordable dining done right, with a focus on – you guessed it – the all-American meal.  

Having taken the lighter route on my last few visits there, eating only a grilled chicken sandwich (a delicious option for non-burger lovers), on my most recent trip, I went to town.  From the simple and straightforward menu, I ordered a single, 1/3 lb. burger with American cheese, tomatoes, pickles and raw onions with a side of “special sauce,” fries and a chocolate shake.  Instead of the typical bun, burgers come on butter-griddled bread and unless specified, are cooked medium rare, to perfection.  First bite of that burger and I knew I’d found a superstar…tasty, moist and worth every calorie.

The fries are everything you'd want...perfectly crispy and salty (with real sea salt), and are even better dipped in the tangy, creamy special sauce for an extra decadent treat.  The sauce, a yummy take on Russian dressing, is intended for the burgers…but why not dip the fries?!  The shake was nice and thick, and oh so chocolatey.  All in all, BSF serves up a great burger, and a great value. The whole shebang (burger, shake, fries), can be yours for just under $11. 

More adventurous burger aficionados can add on some of BSF’s “Big Fixins” to their patties.  Try bacon, a fried egg, chili, sautéed onions and/or mushrooms with Swiss or Gorgonzola cheese.  If you’re not in the mood for a burger or grilled chicken sandwich, opt for a hot dog with onion and tomato sauce or a veggie burger with all the fixins.  Homemade brownies, chocolate chip cookies, and daily shake specials like Cinnamon are an added bonus.  And, their fountain soda dispenser is filled with nothing but Freaky Dog sodas like Barkin’ Birch Beer and Bone Cola.  This place is hip.

BSF is buzzing at lunch time; you get the sense that there’s a cult-following of a wide range of clientele, everyone from suited-up businessmen and construction crews to well-heeled moms with tots in tow.  The vibe is upbeat and relaxed, even in the midst of the busy-ness.  Customers squeeze into one of the twenty counter seats facing the bright-orange walls and delight in their comfort food.  Take-out is also big business here.

Kory Wollins, BSF’s owner, is friendly, hands-on and clearly devoted to his brainchild.  He has hit on a great concept offering high value food in a casual atmosphere that has widespread appeal.  Fairfield County needs more haunts like BSF.
