Guide to Kids Cooking Classes & Camps in Connecticut (2022 Edition)

April Guilbault

Feels like we were all just stuck home together and dreaming of getting OUT and low and behold, now we can! Let’s start with getting those kiddos some cool stuff to do once school lets out. Let’s hear it for cooking camps! To learn (in a fun way) about food, where it comes from, what the heck we can do with it, and yummm, how it tastes-what could be better? Follow it with some parent-kid trips to your local farms or farmers’ markets, and lookie there, you’ve just filled the calendar a bit for the summer months. Here’s to brilliant and tasty new discoveries!

The Fig Cooking School-Milford

www.figcookingschool.com

Held at their state-of-the-art teaching kitchen in Milford, The Fig Cooking School's "Summer Celebrations," “Best of the US,” and “Around the World” kids' cooking workshops, for ages 12-16, will feature recipes anchored in the wealth of colorful, fresh food available during the summer. Fig's interactive teaching will strengthen kids' culinary foundations as they sample local ingredients, learn about flavor profiles, and build strong technique. Fig is also located only 1 block from Walnut Beach, where (weather permitting) kids spend time every day, playing games, and exploring the area. Kids will come away with new friendships, happy tummies, and the skills to explore the culinary possibilities of the world around them. https://www.figcookingschool.com/kids-workshops

Pink Rhubarb-Darien

www.thepinkrhubarb.com

Welcome to The Pink Rhubarb’s sixth year of providing summer programs in cooking, gardening, arts, and crafts. They are delighted to offer another year where your children can relax, learn, and explore both in the kitchen and the garden. Their small, co-ed groups are limited to 18 children ages 5-11 years old and are held at the Mather Homestead in Darien. Counselors are present to help your children prepare home cooked meals, desserts, and work in and harvest from the small cottage garden. There are plenty of teaching moments and connections between what is prepared and what is beginning to grow in the garden! It is important to bring a water bottle, a snack or lunch, sunblock, and any other special keepsakes that make your child feel secure when away from home. No cell phones or electronics please! Please reach out with any questions to: jane@thepinkrhubarb.com 203-979-7076.

Menus are planned according to what’s in season and available, so they will be working with and learning about seasonal, fresh food. They also like to collaborate with our campers on what they want to learn each day. In other words…let the food teach itself! There will be no duplicate recipes weeks 1 and 2, so why not register for both weeks? Note: The kitchens are *not* food allergy free kitchens. Nuts, shellfish etc are used frequently.
