Spring is springing and life is getting closer to resuming. Almost. And we’ve got a holiday on our doorstep! What are we to do for this lovely and happy holiday? Well, let’s do what we have been doing and support area restaurants, some of which are open for indoor dining and most have take away service of fabulous meal packages. Sit back, bask in the warming sun, enjoy the daffodils at your feet and have a beautiful Easter. Something struck me this winter, and do you know what it was? It was a flesh-searing blast of icy wind. On several occasions, actually, and each time I was forced to consider and reconsider which was worse: the strong possibility of frostbite, or a warm mug of gently steaming, thoughtfully prepared booze? The frostbite, I determined, was the less desirable of the two. Having made this intellectual leap, I turned my possibly cold-deadened wits to discovering where I - indeed where we, dear reader - could bend our frozen paws around a glass, mug, or if need be, dish of medium-high proof restorative.
This list (and feel free to add your favorites in the comments, and on our social media feeds) is an incomplete look at everywhere in our great state where hot drinks are sold. Let's just call it a survey, a "jump off," if you must, to locating our lost good will where it can usually be found this time of year, at the bottom of a cup.
We love it when two of our favorite food brands team up for a pop-up that involves delicious carb-loaded brunch fare. You may have heard me sing some praise for Adam Goldberg and his ridiculously tasty Pop-Up Bagels. Well, he has found a new regular Stamford pop-up location and dedicated cooking team with Marcia Selden Catering. Last weekend, CTbites got the chance to tag along for some bagel making fun. Those who know me, know I’m an equal opportunity caffeinator; I start my day low-key and sort of lady-like with a cup of Twinings Earl Grey. BUT, if I haven’t been punched in the face by mid-morning with a good strong cappuccino, then watch out. By the sheer number of places in our great state to get a jolt, I know I’m not alone. AS IF…..Just when we think we’ve caught wind from every CT Food Truck rolling by, there are new ones popping up, or ones we’ve yet to try [too funny, didn’t plan that rhyme there!]. So, in the effort to always share what we love about CT food inside, outside, or on four wheels, here are a few great trucks that have launched in 2020, and a nice long list of mobile food options that will serve as a reminder to those of you who were already in the know! I felt compelled to write this after noticing the same Facebook posts over and over again from recent New York transplants. “Where can I find the best bagels?”
I’d add my two cents and then watch as rows and rows of comments filled my screen. I’d silently cheer or jeer along. Yes!! No! Oh god no, no, no – just no! And with this I decided that I was going to find the best bagels locally.
As a native New Yorker I know a thing or two about bagels. Even though New York City is the Bagel Capital of the World, not all New York bagels are good. I’m looking for those bearing a rich caramel color with a slight sheen that yields the slight crackling crunch when you bite into it, followed by a really good chew.

This review is going to go in reverse because the first thing my family ordered for take-out in the early weeks of quarantine was…ice cream. We fancy ourselves pretty healthy eaters in this house, so our intense want of ice cream one evening will get chalked up to the need for some unabashed comfort food in the face of world events. Mr. Frosty’s Ice Cream in Norwalk is an institution. It (ice)screams summer and salty air evenings, sweatshirts, sandy hair, and flip-flops. However, their newly minted pickup kits will keep you entertained while we wait for any semblance of summer to return. We ordered the “Survival Kit.”
Our next take-out order involved another hungering for summer. A summer in our house is not complete without a lobster roll and we knew where to get a good one: David’s Soundview Catering in Stamford.
“Opening a restaurant demands a fervent love of the business… and because of that love restaurants have historically proven far more resilient than many other small businesses,” writes John Mariani in a recent article for Forbes.We are overjoyed that on Wednesday May 20, Connecticut restaurants can begin opening their doors per the governor and the state’s reopening plan. Things may look a little different at first- outdoor dining only, reduced capacity, spread out tables, and in some cases limited hours- but we are thrilled to return to our favorite local eateries.
