MOMU Ice Cream Shop Opens In Westport From Kneads Bakery Team

Mark your calendars. Westport’s MOMU Ice Cream, which occupies the former Saugatuck Sweets, is set to open this Saturday, April 27th. We were lucky enough to sit down with co-founder, Emily Muñoz, to get the inside scoop (see what we did there?). Here’s everything you want to know.

MOMU is the latest brainchild of MMM Hospitality, the team behind the Dinner Series at Kneads Bakery & Cafe. The hospitality group is comprised of husband and wife duos Brittany and Daniel Moreno (owners of Kneads) and Christian and Emily Muñoz. The four connected while working at the two Michelin star restaurant Blue Hill at Stone Barns and partnered to create a hospitality group with the goal of opening up locations to support local, seasonal cuisine. After much debate on what to name the shop, they settled on “MOMU,” a combination of their two last names, Moreno and Muñoz.

At MOMU, all of the ice cream is made in-house and prioritizes locally-sourced ingredients. The dairy is from Arethusa and Muñoz says that they’ll be letting the farmers markets dictate what’s on the menu. “I am excited to show the community how even ice cream can be farm to scoop. With chef driven flavors, we highlight ingredients from local farmers markets to create our line up of MOMU ice creams,” Daniel shared with us.

In addition to the 16 ice cream and five sorbet flavors, MOMU will also be offering affogatos, milkshakes, hand-packed pints, and, by popular demand, egg cream, a shaken beverage with milk, seltzer, and chocolate syrup. For now, the MOMU team is sticking with the classics (e.g. vanilla, chocolate, cookies and cream, mint chip, etc), but they plan to expand their offerings as they get a sense of what their customers might want. They also will be making all of their waffle cones in-house and are planning to make the toppings in-house too. Yes, even the sprinkles!

“I’m mostly looking forward to playing around with different combinations of ice cream flavors, Since we’re making all the ice cream on-site, we’re able to really make anything we want. I’m excited to see what we can come up with and share with the community,” says Emily.

The MOMU Team’s Picks:

Brittany: Hazelnut

“My favorite ice cream flavor is Hazelnut, but I am excited about the Kneads Bread ice cream.  It’s like French toast in ice cream form!”

Christian: Matcha

“At MOMU, my favorite is matcha ice cream, you can really taste the matcha. I look forward to sharing a space where everyone can create memories together through ice cream. I’m excited to see our guests have the same smile I have everytime I taste MOMU ice cream.” 

Daniel: Mud

“I have always been a fan of Mud ice cream and now even more! Our version highlights coffee from Devoción, local Arethusa milk, and chocolate fudge, and Kneads oreos.”

Emily: Chocolate

“I love rich Chocolate ice cream. At home I drizzle it with olive oil and sea salt. I love the combination of savory and sweet.” 

Jocelyn (GM): Pistachio

“It’s hard to decide on a favorite flavor when I love ice cream in general! If I had to choose it would definitely be pistachio. It’s creamy, nutty, and I never find myself needing to add any extra toppings unless it’s more toasted pistachios!”

“I am very excited to share this project with the community. We have developed incredibly special relationships with all of our guests at Kneads and are looking forward to continuing to grow,” says Brittany.

MOMU will be open daily from 12pm to 10pm and is located at 575 Riverside Ave, Westport.
