Layla’s Falafel Introduces 'Layla’s Create Your Own' Bowls

Jessica Ryan

It’s hard to fathom there might be someone in Fairfield County not yet familiar with Layla’s Falafel. With locations in Stamford, Westport, and Fairfield, Layla’s is bustling with activity – and with good reason, their food is delicious. Layla’s offers something for everyone, satisfying a variety of palates and diet preferences, with options for vegans and vegetarians as well as those with celiac/gluten issues. This Middle Eastern fare is wonderful, fresh, and not to mention healthy.

The first location opened in Fairfield over 20 years ago in 2000 and might best be described as a happy little accident – It’s certainly a great story that bears retelling.

Layla and Dino Sakakini once owned a very popular national sub shop in downtown Bridgeport.  Business was booming and their little sandwich shop was one of the most successful nation-wide. Upon learning that Layla had emigrated from Lebanon, a patron asked if she might be able to make him some tabbouleh. One thing led to another and with full support and encouragement of the franchise, Layla began to make her (now famous) falafel.

Word quickly got out, as tends to happen when great food is involved, and every Friday their customers would flock to the shop in record numbers for the mouth-watering falafel sandwiches which quickly became the best-selling item on the menu. It was then they knew that they needed another home for their Lebanese cuisine, and Layla’s Falafel was born in Fairfield.

Four years later the Stamford location opened, and in 2017 Dino opened the Westport location. This family-run business (Layla and Dino are joined by their daughter Samantha and son John Paul) continues to draw crowds with their authentic flavors and recipes, and continues to shift to stay current with today’s dining trends.

And with that we are happy to share the great news that Layla’s Custom Bowls have been added to the menu. They’re healthy, incredibly satisfying and delicious. And just like the other menu options the bowls can be made vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free.

Building your bowl is simple -  Start by selecting a base of rice or salad. Next, add your protein – choose from the falafel, chicken shawarma, chicken kabob, or shawafel which is half falafel and half chicken shawarma (perfect for those of you, who like me, are indecisive!) From there you’ll select your dip – hummus, garlic or baba ghanoush followed by a selection of sumac onions, garbanzo beans, lettuce, tomatoes and cucumber, pepperoncini peppers, seasoned cauliflower, crumbled feta, pickled cucumber, Kalamata olives, pickled turnips, or red cabbage, and finally, top it off with your choice of tahini or hot sauce.

Layla’s Bowls became an overnight sensation and there’s no wondering why. The serving sizes are incredibly generous and customers get to select all of their favorite ingredients to create their ideal meal.

Layla’s Falafel – pitas, wraps, platters, sides and now bowls are truly exceptional.
