Cru Restaurant Opens in Westport

Cru - the French wine term for "growth" - is also the spankin' new restaurant behind the Gap on Main street in Westport - and this is the perfect name for this hot new spot which shows great promise. The grand, yet very soft opening, happened this week and we were there to get a glimpse of what is to come once the wait staff and kitchen get some mileage under their aprons. Chic and very stylish, CRU is the second restaurant for Steve Prokop and Todd Rose, also of CUVEE' In West Hartford. The decor is very New York lounge-y and the bar seating and tables are inviting and hipster. But the food's the thing and, although there were some bumps along the way, the potential for a smooth road ahead is evident. Review coming soon, but here's what you can expect down the "rue":

The menu is eclectic and a lot of fun. The categories from which you may choose include AMERICAIN, PACIFIQUE, and MEDITERRANEEN'  and there is something yummy for every palette. If you're craving Asian cuisine, select the  Californication Roll or Hamachi Tatare or a delicious SWEET and SOUR BEET Salad. On the MEDITERRANEEN side, choose from HUMMUS FRIES, GREEK SALAD or the SHORT RIB GNOCCHI (which we heard from the table next to ours, was "outstanding.") For the kid within, try CRU's sophisticated take on  GRILLED CHEESE and TOMATO SOUP - on brioche with midnight moon cheese and truffle honey served with green tomato gazpacho or sample the CRAFT MAC and CHEESE made with goat cheese, comte, brie and truffled wild mushrooms.

There are some tiny wrinkles that will surely be ironed out - for example, they should not be serving sushi on "hot" plates - but these are little, fixable hiccups. Cru promises to be a great new hotspot for Westport. Coming soon, outdoor seating with river views! CRU. It's gonna be GRAND.

FYI..... CRU does not have a website set up. The CRU listed by Lee is NY.

They have a Facebook page, not a website.

Their food style (Sarah covered much of this) is (per their FB page)...
American (New)
Asian Fusion
Greek and Mediterranean
Sushi Bars
Tapas Bars

I find the claimed range a little disconcerting, but who knows?

Chic, not sheek

Eight of us stopped by around 9pm Saturday night for a drinks and snacks. While we didn't expect a "table" I noticed there were many open seats at the bar. It was SO LOUD in there that the young hostess could not hear me and when I had to practically shout to report the number in our party, she looked offended. Within moments, a more mature woman appeared at the front of the house and understood my frustration. At this point, our party decided that while this venue looked fabulous, us 50 somethings (yes,we still have our hearing) did not want to have to shout to be heard. Not a relaxing way to have cocktails. Too bad - will have to try it at an earlier time - before the throngs. And speaking of throngs, we then made the mistake of heading over to Bar Taco, which was teeming with 20-30 somethings. It has become quite the bar scene. Couldn't get near the bar!. Oh well - what were we thinking?

Honestly, this seems to be a problem at many local restaurants. Why don't people pay attention and take proper measures to handle the acoustics in their dining rooms?

We went earlier in the evening for cocktails at the bar followed by dinner. The venue is beautiful and the food is absolutely delicious! We started with the crab cakes which melted in our mouths and then ordered our main meal. I had scallops which were not only tender, but also served with an absolutely delicious sauce! Bill had tuna sliders that were "very tasty and more than ample for an entree". Another important note...with our cocktails and wine, we felt the price was very reasonable for all that we had. We're definitely going back!
