CTbites Guide to Connecticut Farm Dinners

The abundance of ramps across Connecticut menus this past week not only signals spring, but also the imminent seasonal collaborations between local farms and the chefs who love them. For Connecticut's farm-loving dining scene, this can only mean one thing—farm dinners are just around the corner.

Why do we at CTbites look forward to these farm dinners so much? It allows us to celebrate and support both the chef as well as the farmer while appreciating the bounty of the Connecticut landscape that we call home (many, but not all of these dinners are fundraisers). With the promise of a new destination and communal seating, diners can enjoy the company of like-minded food lovers. And of course there is the simple and pleasurable act of dining en plein air with grass beneath your feet.

As it is still early in the season, this list of a dozen or so events is in formation, so if you'd like to recommend a dinner or an event we may have missed, please include it in the comments and we will update our list. Whether you look forward to farm dinners as much as we do, or have yet to embrace this seasonal ritual, we encourage you to give one or many a try this year!

Thank you for putting this guide together.

Don't you mean the Schoolhouse farm dinners are on the 3rd Thursday of the month?
Also, the Sept 4th Outstanding in the Field event at Waldenfield Farm in Washington is not sold out yet.
However, the Sept 5th dinner at The Hickories in Ridgefield is sold out.

@Kate

The Schoolhouse farm dinners are the third Thursday of the month with those following dates. That info came directly from our inquiry to the Schoolhouse.

Good point about Outstanding, I didn't realize that hadn't sold-out yet.

Thanks for your feedback!

Farm dinners are a great way to eat delicious food, mingle with like-minded people, and just have a great time in the middle of an open field. I've been to several up here in Vermont and have never been disappointed!

Friends of Boulder Knoll CTbites readers - Friends of Boulder Knoll, a non-profit organization dedicated to conservation, sustainable agriculture, and environmental education, is proud to share the following farm dinner events with you. Both events are fundraisers for our organization's work:

August 11: Casual Evening on the Farm with the Caseus Cheese Truck, farm tours, family fun! http://bit.ly/fobkevening

September 18: Farm to Table Dinner with celebrity chef Jason Sobocinski, amazing farm-to-table meal, live music, silent auction, and more! http://bit.ly/fobkdinner

I love the farm to dinner concept. I went to the Wakeman farm dinner last year. I was very excited prior to going, but the experience did not deliver. The food was good, but just basic. For ~$150 a plate I expected more creativity, and more food options.

I love this concept and one thing I would like to see is which of them offer GMo-free meals.
