Scenes from Chowdafest 2013 & Winners Are Announced!

Chowdafest 2013 rocked the Webster Bank Arena yesterday with 30 restaurants serving up chowders, soups & bisques to over 3000 eager eaters. Guests held their ballots tightly in hand as they sampled their soup, trying to slurp their way to the winner in three categories: New England Clam Chowder, Creative Chowder, and Soup or Bisque.

Valencia Luncheria, Rory's, Bobby Q's, The Crab Shell and many of the area's top chefs each prepared 25 gallons of Chowda not just for mere consumption, but to raise funds and food for the CT Food Bank. Chowdafest representatives tell us that over 1,200 pounds of food were collected during the 5 hour event.

The winners of Chowdafest 2013 are just in. Congratulations to...

Donovan's of Norwalk who won the Classic New England Clam Chowder category!

The Ginger Man of Norwalk who won the Creative Chowder category with their sweet potato clam chowder in a tie-breaker by the narrowest of margins, beating out the Brewhouse Restaurant, also in Norwalk who entered a chicken corn chowder.

The Crab Shell restaurant from Stamford who successfully defended their Soup/Bisque crown with their Lobster Bisque.

Is Rory's Restaurant in Darien under new management?? Went it last Saturday and bartendress (whom I've never seen before) was overserving the customers.(unprofessional) Very loud and rowdy. not like it used to be. We left!!

Looks like the same crowd that goes to Costco to fill up on free samples. Those people will never pay at the restaurant.

I agree with "foodie on line" pics look like a herd of cattle going to graze
I also agree with"Darienite" Rorys DID sell and the new bartenders and management are NOT experienced OR fun!!
Different crowd from years prior
I pass on that one

Guys...who cares what the crowd "looked" like at the event. The entire point was to raise $$$ for The CT Food Bank. This so called "herd" as you put it, paid money and with it, made a donation to a great cause. What did you do yesterday to better our community??

Agree with "davecala" and "too negative" -- you snobs need to lighten up. This was an event to support the CT Food Bank and all who attended should be thanked. We attended and had a great time tasting.

Rorys is not under new ownership and I disagree with "darienite" and "bite concierge". I was there on Saturday. Had a great meal. The owner was bartending for a while and then Allison came on. Both were great fun and professional. I'll be there again this weekend. They also had the best chowder at Chowdafest without a doubt.

Chowdafest 2013 was fantastic! So glad it moved to a bigger venue. We were only able to get samples from about half of the restaurants because we got too full to quickly! The list of participating restaurants included so many of my favorites- Blue Lemon, Valencia, Rory's, SBC... And introduced us to new restaurants we hadn't tried like Liquid Lunch, who made two fantastic soups- Buffalo Chicken (YES!) and a Thai Shrimp Bisque (YUM)! The Brewhouse made a Jalapeno Chicken Corn Chowder and served it with a floater of hot sauce. Out of this world! There was also plenty for the kids, including decorate your own chef's hats and pics with the mascots. Great time!

As for the reviews on Rory's... REALLY? I started going to Rory's 15 years ago, but stopped going when we got tired of hanging with the 'Early Bird Special' crowd. Just started coming in again when the owners of The Blue Lemon (one of our faves!) bought it. SUCH A GREAT TIME! They kept the same menu (something very rare in this industry) to please the regulars, but the specials are always Bryan's very inventive dishes. I recommend the Salmon with pesto (I think it was on special) or the Tuna tartar with avocado and wonton chips. The bartender Allison was attentive and made you feel at home, introducing us to other regulars, whom we struck up great conversations with. What a great neighborhood bar!
