Behind the Wheel of Westport's Ice Cream Truck

“Old McDonald” plays loudly over the sound system as two 19-year-old Westport boys, Jon Camche and Rick Snyder, cruise the streets of Fairfield County in their bright yellow vehicle. Occasionally the lyrics to “Happy Birthday” ring through the air, other times “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” repeats. With over 50 different children’s songs on their playlist, these two college boys take their business seriously.

The 1964 Chevrolet milk truck has been transformed to deliver a different sort of dairy product – ice cream! Camche and Snyder, owners of Everybody Scream Ice Cream, are continuing to put smiles and melted sweets on locals’ faces for the second summer in a row.

Summer favorite offerings include a few familiar faces: Chipwhich, SpongeBob Squarepants Popsicle, Screwball, Choco Taco, Firecracker, and the Strawberry Shortcake bar. With approximately 15 options to choose from each day, the boys’ assortment consists of Good Humor, Klondike, and Popsicle products.

One night, while Camche and Snyder were out having dinner, a Westport mom approached them with a heart-warming story. Her daughter had enjoyed her Chipwhich from Everybody Scream Ice Cream so much that she went home and wrote in her diary about her dream of one day having her own ice cream truck.

Being surrounded by cheerful kids and adults alike allows this to be a dream job for entrepreneurs Camche and Snyder. “I enjoy watching kids jump up and down, waving their hands in the air, as the truck approaches,” said Snyder.

But there’s more to the business than frozen popsicle sticks and delicious ice cream sandwiches. According to Camche, maintaining the truck can be very costly, especially due to its size and age.

Their biggest mistake so far occurred on the Post Road in Westport, when the truck unexpectedly ran out of gas in the middle of traffic. They managed to sell a few treats anyway to delighted customers while waiting for gas to be delivered.

If you spot the big yellow truck traveling the streets, flag the boys down if you want to buy some flavors. They can also be seen selling treats on little league fields, camp pick up locations, or are available on call. Feel free to reach them at 203.246.1481 for inquiries about the truck’s event services. Devin Skolnick grew up in Westport and is currently a student studying Business Marketing at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. When she's not discovering new foods to add to her daily morning omelets, she is training at the gym or spending quality time with her friends and family.
