Lorca Coffee & Churro Shop to Open in Stamford This Fall

Lorca, a 10-12 seat coffee shop that will serve home-made churro and doughnuts, will be opening this October ar 125 Bedford Street in Stamford.

Leyla Dam developed a passion for churro stands as a child growing up in Spain. When she completed architecture school in Brooklyn and was faced with few job prospects in her field, she returned to her roots finding investors to allow her to design and launch a churro and coffee shop. Part of the process of opening Lorca included moving to Seville to learn how to make churros and working with Rachel Haughey at Espresso Neat to learn how to make impeccably brewed coffee. In addition to developing the business and recipes, Dam is also designing the shop, a perfect blend of her passion for the churro and degree in architecture.

As Dam explains, "Basically this is a total dream come true. I get to feed people, meet people, and design without a client. I couldn't ask for anything more!

The menu will include traditional Spanish churros with two types of chocolate ganache dipping sauces: dark chocolate and hazelnut chocolate. The doughnut recipes are still in development but may include a s'mores and lemon meringue doughnut, among several others. Lorca will be a single roaster shop brewing Handsome Coffee from Los Angeles, featuring espressos, cappuccinos, lattes, and naturally Dam's latte art on the drinks. In addition to pulling shots, Lorca will also offer single-origin pour-over coffees from Handsome using a Chemex and a Kalita Wave dripper to make the pour-overs, as well as bulk brewing for commuters and people on the run. In addition to coffee beans, Lorca's teas will be from Steven Smith in Portland.

Stay tuned for Lorca's opening Fall 2012. For more information, visit LorcaStamford.com or follow the Lorca Facebook page.

Leyla Dam's skill at design and cuisine will combine to make Lorca a super cool place to visit frequently. Prediction: she will need to look to expand almost immediately.

Leyla's always had amazing taste, design skills, and culinary prowess. Lorca is going to be a fantastic, aesthetically pleasing place to hang out. Just walking by the space where the shop will be, you know it's going to something special.

Just heard about this shop and am really looking forward to it next time I'm back home in Stamford. It's about time Stamford had a decent coffee to match the growth of interesting restaurants in town. Enjoyed your drinks when I was in the area last winter and a regular at Neat. Love the Handsome boys. Great stuff there. Best of luck to you.
