CT's Most Iconic Burgers: A Beefy Roundup
In honor of National Hamburger Month (yup...we're serious), Leeanne Griffin of the Hartford Courant, went big on beef and rounded up 10 of the most iconic burgers in the nutmeg state. These are burgers definitely worth a taste and a trip.
"Connecticut has many reasons to celebrate National Hamburger Month – it's home to some of the most celebrated, iconic and unusual burgers in the country, including the restaurant recognized as the sandwich's inventor. Here are 10 noteworthy (and crave-worthy) Connecticut creations." - Leeanne Griffin Read the complete article here.
Let us know if you have any other burger greats to add to the list.

This is Hartford-centric, not even one from Fairflied Cty. What's this doing on CTBites, supposedly Fairfield Cty. And it's a reprint.
Stephanie, Stephanie, Stephanie.
As I said...some burgers are worth traveling for.
Stephanie is right - many of these burgers are worth traveling for.
If you glance at the article, you'll see that Plan B Burger Bar is scheduled to open in Milford and Stamford later this year. Also, the Black Bear Saloon challenge burger is available at all locations, including the ones in Fairfield County.
I'm already planning on visiting a few of these places this summer, burger crawl anyone?
@LG Something against the rest of the state? I hope we can include more CT coverage like this and hope our readers are open to it because some of us live just as close to Hartford as we do to Greenwich.
Here's a little one person focus group for you, Stephanie and Amy.
I really like what you two have done with CTBites; it's some success story.
I am a fan because it focusses on Fairfield County. As opposed to Chowhound, which has become less and less local . As one reader, I appreciate the tighter focus... that's part of the power of the internet, the exploitation of the niche.
Also I've come to expect fresh original writing on CTB, not a reprint of a story from another publication. Why not just supply the link. btw, I would love a metareview from you guys... links to stories, blogs, reviews of interest. Similar to what Liz Johnson does in Westchester. FoodBuzz for Fairfield County.
I'm sure you'd like to extend the brand, but you do run the risk of dilution.
My other problem with the article is the misleading headline. Any article about "Ct's Most Iconic Burgers" that doesn't mention such standouts as Napa, leFarm, Harvest Supper, BSF (Louis Lunch on steroids), Cherry Street East, etc. is mislabled. If it read "Central Connecticut's Most Iconic Burgers" then more legitmate.
Maybe the CTB headline should have been... "Burgers worth a Drive" ... then it all would have been more accurate and within the brand I have come to know.
A "worth a drive" series might be a way of widening the lens without losing the fairfield focus.
I have nothing against the rest of the state, Amy. But do think Fairfield County has the best food in it. I would make New Haven an honorary FFC town.
But then, it's your show. And my opinon and twentyfive dollars will get you a wygu burger at Napa.
I will concede it is a Hartford-centric list, but I considered the source (the Courant) when I read it so I didn't find it misleading. This is our version of a fist-bump to a fellow food blogger writing and reporting great things, not a reprint. We've done these types of shout-outs and will continue to do them when we discover links that warrant sharing. This blog is more than just writing original content, which we take great pride in, it is also about curating and sharing content and forming relationships.
Living in Fairfield County, I am partial to our neck of the woods and whole heartedly agree with your burger list (my own looks similar with BSF and leFarm at the top), but I embrace that we occasionally foray to the other counties and across state lines for what we tag as Road Trips, like finding the perfect lobster roll which I don't think our fair county can claim.
We actually do a slightly similar weekly list to Liz Johnson called Reheated. It includes some of our links, other local links and occasionally interesting national food news.
And thanks for your feedback. The site is a community resource and I'll be the first to sidle up to the counter at Napa with you for a $25 Wagyu burger.
there's a pretty good lob roll at knapp's landing in stratford. it's a ct roll, hot buttered lobster in a hamburger bun, not the ersatz lobster SALAD roll with mayo in a hotdog bun that you get in non connecticut. since stratford the most eastern town in fairfield cty, it squeaks in by a nose.
the view is unbeatable -- the mouth of the housatanic at the sound, with fifshing boats plying the waters ang gulls wheeling overhead
also rowayton damn good
Don't get me wrong, Burgers, Shakes & Fries is good, but Benny's Fast Break's are slightly better, and Filling Station's are a lot better. Really great burgers at those spots! Also, how about Chocopologie's burger? That burger is really just to die for. So goodddddd.
I seem to recall posting this before- so forgive me if I did! Since this blog is supposed to be about Fairfield County, here are my favs in Westport. You can't beat the ambiance and the burgers at The Black Duck- an old Ice Barge on the Saugatuck River, replete with great fried clams, and other yummy bar food items. If you are looking for a "dressier" venue, the burgers at Tavern on Main are delicious and perfectly grilled- you can eat at the bar as well!
I think Stephanie and Amy do a nice job of walking the line between being completely Fairfield-centric and providing information for beyond Farifield County that would appeal to Fairfield County locals.
Thanks for the link - seeing it was a Hartford Courant article I was expecting it to be Hartford centric - but still cool to see.
If CTBites was completely rigid, we'd miss mentions of New Haven pizza, steamed cheeseburgers, and Blue Hill at Stone Barns - all of which only border Fairfield County but which are unique in the food landscape and of obvious appeal to the CTBites audience.
