Shout Out: Best Japanese in Fairfield County?

One of our most commonly asked questions in terms of restaurant guidance is where to go for great Japanese food in Fairfield County (or just beyond)?  There is nothing more sublime than a piece of top grade sushi, but when it is less than divine, it can be a dining disaster.  And we're not just talking about sushi here. Where do you go for great Udon, a well balanced seaweed salad, or inventive maki? Help out your fellow readers, and tell us...

What are the best Japanese Restaurants in Fairfield County?

Kiku in Stamford. It was a nice off-the-beaten-path place to get my sushi fix when I lived in Stamford. Kazu in South Norwalk was always good too. Now that I live in Fairfield area, I go to Ichiro in Trumbull.

Ritz Asia on Rt 7, Ridgefield is every bit as wonderful as their Manhattan location but no one seems to know about it. Hope it doesn't fail due to location!
Also, House of Yoshida in Bethel is a hidden gem!

Miso in New Haven is the best I've had in the state, but Matsuri on the Post Rd. in Darien is my go-to.

Matsuri Darien - the freshest ever had - their main location is in Chelsea runner up Tengda Darien

Best I've found in CT: Miso in New Haven. If you're feeling adventurous, I recommend sitting at the sushi bar. Introduce yourself to Chef Jason Tay and let him take it from there. Usually the best sashimi dishes are on the specials board. They are pricier than the rest of the menu, but worth it.

Nagoya in South Norwalk never disappoints!

Kawasaki in Bantam - A bit of a drive, but a nice one and well worth it. Owners run places in the city and have a second home in the area, apparently. Chef's Special Rolls are yummy, fresh and innovative. Love the whitefish tempura appetizer.

I can't believe Sakura hasn't been mentioned yet. It's been in Westport since the 1970s and has held its own, and their sushi is FAR more fresh and authentic than Tengda. Their spicy scallop hand roll is to die for, the chirashi sushi is fresh with nicely-seasoned rice, and the rice they use for their maki rolls is almost always slightly warm. Also, the seaweed salad, the yellowtail collar, and oshitashi are all outstanding.

Can we lift the bar on these posts a little - can folks be more specific regarding why they think the restaurant they're recommending is the best? California roll and anything with tempura-fried seafood or cream cheese is not real sushi, and I'd love to know where folks who enjoy the real stuff go, and why.

matsu sushi is terrible

May 2, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermatt

Went to Matsuri on Black Rock Turnpike in FF - it was quite good, but to my palate, still not as good as Sakura. On the other hand, we went to Sakura on Saturday night, and THAT was a mistake - it's absolutely packed, and I found the food and service to be of lesser quality. Kazu in Norwalk is next. Oh, and Fin in FF is pretty good, as well.

Went to Kazu in South Norwalk last night - it was tremendous. Honestly some of the best sushi I've ever had, and i tried some "riskier" items, like sea urchin (uni), raw scallop and giant clam. Everything was enormously fresh, sweet, briny - it was really hard not to order another of each of those. I can't wait to go back - thanks so much for recommending this place.
