Mario Batali is Coming to Westport??!!!

I nearly dropped my lunch when I read Dan Woog's post today on Mario Batali opening up shop in Westport CT. Yup...our very own Italian outpost right next to the train station. With Shake Shack coming in late 2011, Westport is looking like NYC East.

You can read the full article on Dan Woog's blog 06880, but here is what he had to say....

"On Friday, sources say, Batali closed on the former Abbondanza property.  The popular restaurant/speciality food store — across from the Charles Street office building in Saugatuck — closed last April.  (It reopened in August, in Fairfield.)

No details on Batali’s newest venture are available yet, such as a projected opening date or name.  He prefers Italian names — Babbo Ristorante, Lupa Osteria Romana, Pizzeria Mozza — and of course for nearly a century Saugatuck was a vibrant Italian community." -- Dan Woog's 06880

I heard some chatter about this at Souterrain last summer. Exciting to hear this chef is really coming to town!

This further solidifies Westport's place as the preeminent dining destination in the county!!! I'm jealous he didn't come here to Darien, which could REALLY use the help, or Stamford which might need it even more!

I am very excited to welcome Mario Batali to Westport CT. Living in the Saugatuck area I cannot wait to explore the proposed apartments, new restaurants, and stores. I believe the great improvements are going to provide the Saugatuck neighborhood with new life.
Benvenuti a Westport.

Absolutely ecstatic. I honestly gasped with excitement when I read this. However, I'm confused. The CT Bites email says Tarry Lodge Enoteca & Pizzeria are moving to Westport, while the post says they don't know the name yet???

Downunder Kayaking and Paddleboards welcomes Mario Batali as our new neighbor. Our cool new surf and board shop opens in May on the Saugatuck River next to the Black Duck! Our clients will love the options for food in the Saugatuck area after paddling the river!!
See you soon! Kim

Westport CT resident WASP's rejoice! You no longer have to take a late night car service home in order to enjoy the Batali Corporation's interpretation of Italian food!
