Support Fresh Food Campaign @ Westport Farmers’ Mkt

Wanna help? Members of the community are requested to donate fresh, healthy produce and non-perishables to their neighbors in need as part of CT Food Bank’s fresh food campaign.  This Thursday, October 6th, come on down to the Westport Farmers’ Market and participate in a food drive to benefit Connecticut Food Bank, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Westport Farmers Market was thrilled to learn of the CT Food Bank’s fresh food campaign.

“We’re encouraging shoppers to grab some items from their pantries before heading over to the market,” said Lori Cochran-Dougall, Director at Westport Farmers’ Market.  They then can fill their bag or grab a free one from MXenergy and then top it off with fresh produce and other market products. Just think how far $20.00 can go…”

With WFM already contributing each week to the Bridgeport Rescue Mission this was a natural fit. The Westport Farmers Market did not know that they would be the first farmers market to embrace this new program with a food drive. “We hope that our efforts will initiate our fellow markets to do the same.” Said Cochran- Dougall.

“The Westport Farmers’ Market food drive is an opportunity to support local farmers and provide people who are having a tough time feeding their families with fresh, healthy produce,” said Nancy L. Carrington, Connecticut Food Bank’s President & CEO.  “Every extra tomato, squash or watermelon can go a long way to help feed those who don’t have enough to eat every day. We are grateful to Westport Farmers’ Market for supporting Connecticut Food Bank’s mission to alleviate hunger in Connecticut.”

While Connecticut has the highest per capita income in the U.S., nearly 400,000 people are at risk of hunger each year, and cannot always afford balanced, nutritious meals. They include children, working parents, people with disabilities and seniors.

Westport Farmers Market: Thursdays, 10 – 2, May – March. The Westport Farmers Market is committed to providing fresh, local, healthy and seasonal food. We aspire to create a fun, safe and healthy community environment for education and socialization. Support local!!
