Cap'n Crunch Milkshakes @ The Filling Station

The Filling Station Company is kicking it old school for the month of February with their Cap'n Crunch milkshake.

Always partial to cereal infused frozen dairy desserts (think Momofuku Milk Bar), you'll know where to find me tomorrow...New Canaan.

The cult-love for Cap’n Crunch grabs a beach-head in New Canaan this month as The Filling Station’s Shake of the Month launches the Cap’n Crunch Shake. The CC Shake is a nicely balanced vanilla flavored base (the final recipe reduced the sweetness of the earlier prototypes) with pieces of Cap’n Crunch mixed throughout. Overall I liked the end result and my favorite aspect was the crunchiness that FS has included in two of its last three special shakes (loved the peppermint pieces in December). I recommend that they try to keep that crunchiness in future recipes.

For those who go to FS for the burgers, the February special burger is a Reuben Burger. I grew up loving the Reuben’s peppery pastrami, the tart sauerkraut, the 1000 Island dressing and the nutty Swiss, all grilled on wonderful rye bread. I wondered how this memory would be recreated. FS tops one of their single beef patties with Swiss cheese and its homemade apple braised sweet sauerkraut and 1000 Island dressing. To gain the smoky element they added spice to the dressing and pepper is sprinkled atop the burger prior to grilling. The end result is a very robust flavored burger. The 1000 Island dressing and the sauerkraut were extremely flavorful and bold and might overwhelm a single burger. This may be a burger that needs the double-meat option. Likewise, the Swiss cheese may take a back seat to the other flavors so if they offer double-Swiss, this may also be a good option. Did it remind me of a Reuben sandwich? Not really…did I think it was a fun and tasty combination, absolutely and I recommend it as a fun way to dress up a burger.

So the February Specials at Filling Station offer a really flavorful Reuben Burger and a tasty homage to Cap’n Crunch.

First trip to Filling Station. Liked the shake special - like j food, I think the crunch works. Reuben burger was good - reminiscent of the classic eponymous Crown Burger that you find at the Salt Lake City chain - though that does include corned beef so it is more of a literal Reuben Burger - but this was still tasty. Also had a Station Burger that was nice. Although I don't tend to like crinkle fries, these worked - with the increased surface area getting lots of crisp.

It's a cramped place - mostly suitable to take-out (which makes it odd that they serve beer and wine). And given that quality it is weird that you get channeled to the back to get your food, because there is hardly room to squeeze back out, between the people lined up against the counter and the tables against the wall. But service was solid as they made the effort to keep things moving and make sure folks are being helped - classy level of attention for a casual place. If they were in Westport, I'd say they would be a nice alternative to Five Guys (though I would say the burger is a notch below those at Fairfield's Super Duper Weenie). Still, I'm glad I had the chance to stop and, when I'm looking for a quick bite in New Canaan, I wouldn't hesitate to drop by again.
