Connecticut, the Hamburger State?

A Hamburger Today shared this 'Food by State' map which assigns a food to each state. In a move that may both excite teenagers and strike fear in Cardiologists, our dear Connecticut is apparently the Hamburger state. Perhaps this is based on that famous New Haven institution Louis Lunch, the purported founder of the beefy sandwich, or the inimitable steamed burger from Ted's in Meriden. Either way, we do seem to have quite the burger provenance.

So Nutmeggers, do you think this is correct? If one food could really represent Connecticut, what do you think it should be?

Jam!
For the most part, I grew up in California. When I found out that my first college roommate who would be joining me at a small liberal arts college in Massachusetts was from Connecticut I had no idea what to expect. After thinking it over for a while, a friend told me that people from Connecticut make their own jam. I must admit that a few years after I moved here, I started breaking out the mason jars. :)

Surprised this goof food site didn't just list nutmeg for Ct...

As evidenced by their lack of imagination for Mississppi Mud Pie, Nebraska corn, Wisconsin Cheese, etc.

Of course not one scrape of nutmeg has every been grown in Connecticut. Do you know how Ct earned the title of the Nutmeg State? (hint -- has nothing to do with consumption of Egg Nog or really good creamed spinach)

@ Lou - it sounds better than calling us the Faux Nutmeg State, right?

Cindy - The Jam State. Sort of has a nice ring to it and a bit of a double entendre going there too. I like it. I'm gonna agree with some of the CTbites Facebook comments and say I'd lean toward pizza. We make some mean pizza here in CT and with the exception of NYC & a couple of places in SF, there are very few places you can get good pizza. We are pizza spoiled here.

@Amy I agree. That and bagels.

There are people who believe we should have been designated the pizza state. Let's talk through CT vs NY. Here is my theory. NY has so little food they can lay claim to. Manhattan Clam Chowder was invented in RI, all the street carts just grab great food from other states and countries and then they have their one claim to fame...the Buffalo Chicken Wing. The uproar from all the Manhattanites having the state of NY known for something from Buffalo was beyond acceptable. Now since we in CT had 2 choices, the wonderful people of CT decided to be nice and let NY have pizza, even though we all know we have better pizza in CT than NY. :-))
