This Week In Wine: Jelu Pinot Noir

Jelu Pinot Noir is from the Patagonia region in Argentina.  Patagonia may be better known for its majestic mountain range than for wine growing, but the cool climate found here is especially suited to the fickle Pinot Noir grape. The Jelu vineyards are located at high elevation which enables the grapes grown there to retain their bright acidity and supple fruit flavors as they slowly ripen.

Medium-bodied with flavors of black cherry, ripe raspberry and a hint of savory herb. Smooth tannins and fresh acidity makes this wine simple but satisfying -- and a great value for the money.  Pair with Humboldt Fog cheese, cedar-plank grilled salmon or roasted chicken.

Sold retail for about $16 per bottle.  Available for purchase at:

Castle Wine & Spirits, 1439 Post Road East, Westport

Leary’s Liquor Cabinet, 186 Heights Road, Darien

Or if you would like to ‘try before you buy' you may find it served by the glass at Barcelona Restaurant.

A friend gave this wine to my wife and I as a gift. It was excellent. Kathleen's description is spot on. Who knew good Pinot came from Argentina?

I had Jelu at Barcelona probably 2 years ago. . absolutely loved it and wanted to get a bottle for my husband as a gift because he loved it as well. It was only sold on premise at the time. . . I'm very happy to learn it's now sold in stores (off-premise) as I'm really anxious to get it!!! It's VERY good . . .especially for the price!!!
