Meatopia BBQ NYC...It's Only 1 Hour Away!!

While we pride ourselves in seeking out great eats in Fairfield County, sometimes good food requires a road trip. If you're looking for a little meat-oriented culinary adventure this weekend, we've got just the thing for you. Jump a train to NYC and savor the BBQ smorgasbord that is "Meatopia."

What is Meatopia?

On Sunday, July 11th from 11:30am – 4:30pm, 30+ Chefs and BBQ teams will be kicking up the heat & barbecuing every dish under the sun.  Restaurants like La Esquina, Boqueria, Wilson's BBQ and even "The Food Lab" from Seriouseats.com will be contributing to the Meatopia Menu.

Here's the best part...These top chefs will be only be barbecuing local and sustainable meats. Many chefs are pairing with a local farm to use products from regional farms. Truly, how can you not go?

Now let's get some drooling going here...Contemplate for a moment a few of their featured menu items including: Smoked Duck Tacos, Mexican BBQ Lamb, Mini Short Rib Pies, and a Grilled Bacon Sandwich. (Who needs the lettuce and tomato, really?)

The inaugural Meatopia event is co-hosted by James Beard Award winning food writer Josh Ozersky along with Taste of Tribeca Co-Chair and "Good Beer Month" Founder, Jimmy Carbone, as well as master pit master Robbie Richter of Fatty ‘Cue.

"Meatopia: BBQ NYC" is a food festival focusing and supporting the local community with walk-around tastings, beer and live entertainment.

Where is Meatopia?

Governors Island, NYC  (located at the southern tip of Manhattan). Ferries are free and will run every 30 minutes from Manhattan and every 10 minutes from Brooklyn. Get detailed directions here.

Do I need tickets?

Meatopia is a free event, but if you would like to take part in the chef's tasting menus you will need to get yourself some tickets. They start at $25 for a 3 tasting menu, $45 for 6 course menu.

oohh.. Meatopia... however... what are the guidelines for "Eating in Fairfield County" here? Will we drive to NYC but not to Stratford. I only ask because on a search of site that supports eating in Fairfield County, I find a post (this one) for LEAVING Fairifield County, but not much mention of eating in Stratford (actual Fairifield County).

I mean, living in Stratford, I can attest there isn't much here to drive to. However, if we KEEP driving to the city to look for good food, then we don't support the great food we DO have here!

Elizabeth-And hence my disclaimer regarding this unusual post, but we just had to spread the word on this one. We are committed to eating locally and we follow that mission faithfully as this is the first post in a full year that has you wasting gas. We'd love to cover more by you. What do you recommend?

Stephanie, Dao Fusion for Sushi/Japanese (hence the name fusion) is very good. And the ownership is fantastic, check out website for discounts as they are just starting out. Off River Road near Sikorsky (Oronoque area). In that same strip is The Grille and Bar, also very good. For GREAT Irish dish, McCoy's on Main Street is recently opened. Owned by Mikey, the previous butcher from The Dressing Room. Also Bin 100 in Milford (on the Post Road) get raves from everyone we know.
