Moe's Burger Joint in Old Greenwich via The Hamblogger

It's safe to say we've had burgers on the brain this week. Our recent CTbites Burger Shout-Out is our ode to this quintessential American dish with dozens of readers weighing in on their favorite burger. So when I saw the all-beef-all-the-time blog The Hamblogger touched down in CT at Moe's Burger Joint in Old Greenwich, I knew I had to share the love. The Hamblogger's Chris Preovolos sums up what makes Moe's "a serious hamburger establishment."
"Situated in a tiny strip mall of sorts along busy Route 1 in what is otherwise the great-granddaddy of waspy suburbs, Moe’s sticks out. A vast majority of the patronage here — including myself — could be classified as proverbial East-Coast-elitists, but that doesn’t stop Moe’s from being a serious hamburger establishment."

I decided to take one for the team and went to Moe’s Burger Joint today for my normal bacon cheese burger fries and chocolate shake. In my humble opinion, the place was somewhat disappointing and would not have made my top-10 in last week’s burger shout out. In fact I think Chris was a true gentleman in giving this place a 3.5 out of 5 points. I would probably rate Moe’s a 2 on the 5-point scale.
I ordered my BCB, fries and shake and sat at the counter overlooking the grill (in the article it is the empty seat in the picture). The burgers they placed on the flat top were large (the photo in the article is spot on). Over the course of the next few minutes I watched the burger-chef squeeze every ounce of juice out of these patties. It was like watching a first time griller dad who just moved to the ‘burbs and has his first gas grill. He just kept squeezing and sizzlin’. He placed a long strip of bacon on the flattop, cut in half, added two slices of American Cheese and placed them on the sesame seed covered bun that was heated on the grill. The photo on line is a little taller than mine and it probably had other toppings. And the end result of the taste and juiciness of the burger were exactly as expected. Although the burger was cooked to a perfect medium-rare, the burger-chef had removed 95% of the burger’s juiciness. The bacon and cheese were very flavorful but I wanted to taste the meat so I pulled a piece of meat from the bun and sample by itself. This was not a deep flavored meat, very bland, and, as expected, extremely compressed. Very disappointing.
The fries were traditional McD-style fries that were crispy on the exteriors, but there was little if any softness or potato flavor on the inside of the fries. They were fair at best, arrived with no salt, and I only ate about half of them.
On a positive note; the highlight of the meal was the chocolate shake (served without the whipped cream). Ghiradelli’s chocolate syrup and Grant’s ice cream (that is what they told me) are the main ingredients and it was very smooth, had a good chocolatey flavor and I really enjoyed the shake. Should have ordered on to go.
Overall I was disappointed in my experience at Moe’s after high hopes from the hamblogger article.
