October is National Pizza Month and any way you slice it, pizza reigns as one of America's favorite foods. A mere glance at those pizza pics has me drooling all over my keyboard.  Crunchy, chewy, cheesy, oil dripping into the palm of your hand. NY style? Brick oven? I may need a moment.

I love Pepe's in Fairfield, but when I'm in Hartford its Harry's on Farmington all the way!

FAT CAT and none other

October 4, 2010 | Unregistered Commenternanruz

DOMINOS? - da da are you INSANE? That's cardboard and ketchup with the kind of cheese that does not need to be refrigerated.

Pepe's White Clam, or Colony sausage.

The Greek Salad pizza at Jordan's in Norwalk rocks. So light and delish.

October 4, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKerry Barlas

Well, Domino's may suck, but they do refrigerate their cheese. Just sayin'.

I live north of all of you and Harry's Bishops Corner in West Hartford is my favorite.

I went to Pepe's and it was good, but not as amazing as I was expecting from all the hype.

I must try this Fat Cat you all speak of...

Harry in West hartford, or Naples in Farmington.....(I'm a little biased though, I prefer my mobile brick oven!

Local pizza dough with local toppings....doesn't get better than that!

What about Remo's on Bedford Street in Stamford! Defenitely must be a contender for the best!

Pellicci's Ristorante in Stamford
I'll pit them against any New Haven pie. They use a sharper cheese and it is always cooked to bubbling perfection.
The Amalfi with clams, rock shrimp, bacon and spices is fantastic and half the price of the same Pepe's combination.

Pepe is fantastic pizza. The shrimp and garlic pizza is crazy good.

Don't mean to betray the Fairfield County spirit of things, but "local" is one of those things I know when I see, even if I cross a county line. So without drawing lines...

Roseland Apizza is, to me, the best of the old school pies. (But it's great having Pepe's in Fairfield.)
Pizzeria Lauretano in Bethel is best of the thin crust pies.

It depends on what we are in the mood to eat and how far I want to drive to pick it up. I'm not claiming they are the best, but honestly (here's an apologetic endorsement for you) nine times out of ten, when I want a "less than five minute drive" take-out pie, it's Bertucci's. Fresher tasting than the chain pizzas. More veg, less cheese. More tomato, less sauce. I like 'em. I think they do a nice job, but wait for the day someone cites this endorsement as a failure in my otherwise good taste!

Sauseeege and hot oil at colony in Stamford will never be beat. EVER!

I have always loved Post Corner Pizza in Darien and Hope Street Pizza in Stamford. But I'll eat it from almost anywhere!

I go with Sally's over Pepe's in New Haven by a slim margin. More in the Fairfield County realm though I think Strada 18 does a very good job both on quality of the crust and choice of toppings. They are creative yet restrained in the adornment of their pizza, and they have a good beer list to go with the pies.

Nothing groundbreaking, but I like these:

1. Colony - Stamford
2. Letizia's - Norwalk
3. Molto - Fairfield
4. Julian's - Westport
5. Coalhouse - Stamford
6. Joe's - New Canaan
7. Fat Cat - Norwalk
8. Pepe's - Fairfield
9. Jordan's - Norwalk
10. Remo's - Stamford

Nauti Dolphin at the Fairfield Train Station....amazing brick oven pizza!!!! Their seasoning on the "commuter pizza" with chicken and sun-dried tomatoes is fantastic.

Fat Cat for sure with Pepe's a close 2nd.

October 11, 2010 | Unregistered Commentersuec

We have now tried just about all of the above and here are our comments:
Fat Cat: Very good pizza, inventive menu, the BEST salads and beer & wine list. Fun place to go out with friends, parents, in laws, & even kids. It can be kind of loud, but it is a favorite place for us. It is really in its own category and can't be compared to the others, except maybe Colony Grill. We are close enough that we are here often and the pizza certainly ranks well.
Sally's: Love the pizza, but I think it is ridiculous to wait so long on line. Of course, we - the idiots - perpetuate this by doing so from time to time. The long line certainly builds the myth, but we think it is overall worth it - as much as for the experience. It is infuriating to see empty booths though when we are freezing or sore from standing on concrete. Also, the BS of letting friends bypass the line wears on me.
Pepe's: Also very fond of their New Haven goodness. We are reasonably happy with the Fairfield venue, but sometimes go to the Spot when we really want a fix.
Modern: Very good. I particularly like their hours and more customer-friendly approach. They are close enough to the highway exit, that we may begin using it as our drive by pickup place.
Bar: Love that bacon & mashed potato pie! It is truly outstanding. Nice place and convenient enough to the hospital.
Bimontes: Used to be very good. Still worth a try as Eli's. Better than your average neighborhood place and a reasonable competitor with the celebrity places.
Colony Grill: Certainly an interesting approach with the very thin crust and greasiness. We like it, and would eat there if in the area, but don't really go out of our way to eat there.
Letizia's: Quite good, but also requires its own category with the apparent intentional greasiness. We have not become fans of the white pie, which some people really rave about. It is close to us and the sauce is quite good.
Overall, our absolute favorite is DeNino's on Staten Island. A little far from the locale, but IT IS WORTH IT.
Really, this question is like ranking your children. However, they all have excellent merit and are worth trying. I'm hoping to explore some of the other suggestions above.
If I were forced to name a favorite:
Overall: Sally's is up there and a nose above Pepe's just based on taste.
Individual/unique combo: Bar's bacon and mashed potato pie is a must try.
Thin: Fat Cat probably tops the thin category because of the whole experience and other offerings (salad, drinks, hipster/eco vibe, inventive toppings).

This really is a fun topic to contemplate and analyze.
