Food Talk > Blender reccs?

My blender died this morning. Does anyone have a GREAT one to recommend? I finally got my not-so-good-with-the-fruits-and-veggies-eating daughter to try a smoothie so I must replace the blender right away!

Here's what Cook's Illustrated recommends, and they know their stuff. We purchased Cook's Illustrated's previous recommendation, (which is now discontinued) but it has served us VERY well. We've added their "Best Buy" to our Gadget Guru store if you would like to order one from Amazon. Let us know what you think.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED $149.99
KitchenAid 5-Speed Blender
A large, powerful machine that aced our three key performance tests. Ice was quickly pulverized into snow, smoothies were lump-free, and hummus was perfectly consistent. Although the blades could not be removed, the entire jar is dishwasher-safe. For a cheaper version of this same blender (with a different finish), look for model # KSB560.

RECOMMENDED $49 (actually $38 on Amazon)
Kalorik BL Blender, Model 16909
Excelled at ice crushing and hummus mixing but left pulp in the smoothie. This ultra-quiet blender had an innovative design: six blades—two serrated—and a steeply tapered glass jar that helped keep the contents moving, hitting it at different angles. The removable base and blades made cleaning a breeze.

Thanks, Stephanie. My normally hands-off husband ended up ordering a Cuisinart blender & food processor from amazon for about $40 total with free shipping. He checked the prices against Cuisinart's site and found amazon significantly cheaper. We have a food processor already but it's small so I'm psyched to get a regular-size one, plus the blender of course.
