Food Talk > Best weekend breakfast

One of our favorite things to do with the kids is enjoy a leisurely Sunday breakfast. We load them up with coloring books and pens and head out to SoNo Bakery. They have delicious coffee and although it can be difficult to get a table, if you're lucky you'll score the seats at the counter so the kids will be able to watch the bakers rolling dough and preparing pastries. It keeps our kids occupied for at least an hour.

If the weather's nice, we love to go to Elvira's Deli at Old Mill Beach. They have recently upgraded their "outdoor dining" area and have lovely bench tables with umbrellas. They make a yummy egg and bacon sandwich, but my favorite breakfast down there is an egg white, bacon and tomato sandwich on rye toast with hot sauce. Stacy, Nick, Nicky, and Harry will always greet you with a smile.

Where do you like to go?

I used to LOVE to go to ZEST in Westport, but since it closed, we have moved on to Le Pain Quotidien in New Canaan. Yes...it's a chain, but it doesn't feel like it. We love the long communal tables, the fresh bread, entirely organic menu, and the steel cut oats are delicious. Plus you can have it cooked with soy milk for those lactose intolerant. They offer omelettes, and other standard breakfast fare. Try the lattes as well. Other than Caffeine in Sono, they make some of the better coffee in Fairfield County.

if i wake up and Im in the mood for a little driving, I enjoy going to SONO BAKERY, in Norwalk...
i just love their LATTEs and everything there is just sooooo yummy!!!
and when im lazy i just go EINSTEIN BAGEL at Black Rock TRNPK in Fairfield...
not a big fan of the coffee but they make some good breakfast sandwiches.

Great little restaurant in the Black Rock section of Bridgeport (borders on Fairfield). Home on the Range at 2992 Fairfield Ave - Whole Grain Pancakes with grilled peaches and blueberries yummy - yummy. Also, the old standby fare of Bacon & Eggs over easy with potatoes is also great! The only problem is that each order is cooked individually by "POP" while "MOM" waits the tables - about 10 tables. Very inefficient, but everything is fresh, cooked to order and hot when you get it. Not a place for a type "A" personality, but for a leisurely breakfast with the wife and the newspaper, it can't be beat!

I used to love Gail's Station House in Ridgefiled until it burned down a few years ago... rumor has it that it re-opened in another location in Ridgefield-- anyone know anything about this??

It used to be Zest for us too (sigh) but now we're pretty much tied into the Sherwood Diner. Can't say I love it (although their egg white sandwich is respectable) but it's the kids' favorite and always very reliable. Coffee An' in Westport is also good (in fact for me it's better than Sherwood) but they do NOT have chocolate chips for pancakes which makes it a deal breaker for my clan unless I throw in the donut teaser which definitely gets them there.

I am about two months late for this discussion but since we are so happy with our new “breakfast place” find I will still go ahead. We love Sunday breakfast and were disappointed to see Gail’s Station House and then Zest go.
Lately, we have been going to ROSIE’S in New Canaan. We have tried just about anything by now and it is all delicious! Their whole wheat blueberry pancakes are to die for, as is the French Toast. The egg dishes are innovative and on the healthier side, compared to the traditional counterparts. The only problem is the limited seating, but we anxiously wait as we browse the bookstore next door.

Valencia on Main Ave in Norwalk serves breakfast. Try the Lobster Eggs Benedict (if they have it) - this place will AMAZE you!

An old post worth updating...

Gail's re-opened as Gail's on the Green, in a shopping plaza off 7. Nowhere close to it's previous incarnation in location, atmosphere, nor quality, it closed last year. Patty now does catering.

Three places who deserve attention for best breakfast are New Canaan Diner Nicholas Roberts and Valencia Luncheria.

New Canaan Diner with it's retro-kitch atmosphere serves great eggs, omelettes, pancakes, french toast. Really nice addition to town.

Nicholas Roberts in Norwalk has terrific breakfast wraps/burritos, french toast, pancakes, sandwiches. These guys take pride in their ability to cook eggs with perfection...a lost art these days.

Finally, Valencia Luncheria...with it's Venezuelan-inspired cuisine makes for a unique, adventurous start to the weekend. My faves are the monkey bread french toast, the chorizo and egg arepas, huevos rancheros, and Eggs Beneditos. Their Batidos (oblended fruit & milk...think smoothies/daiquiries) are also fantastic.

I finally hit up Rosie's for brunch this past Sunday remembering they serve a New Orleans inspired brunch menu in addition to their regular menu. The praline pancakes are worth their caloric equivalent in gold. Hands-down the best stack of pancakes I've had in years. Of course the complimentary mimosa did not hurt the cause.

I LOVE GEORGIE'S DINER! It a wonderfully restored chrome-coated abode that seems to do everything right. We found them via their billboard on RT 95. It was our curiosity for their vegan menu that drew us in, but its the equally fabulous non-vegan fair, fun hipster staff and comfortably nostalgic atmosphere that has kept us coming back.

Just the other day I managed to refrain from indulging in the cream cheese stuffed French toast and ordered the one egg breakfast. When I declined the home fries I was delighted to be prompted by our waitress to take advantage of a free substitute (fruit, french fries or something else I can't remember), anyways the fruit was exactly what I wanted. :]

Please go and see for yourself. Oh and don’t miss the Flan, it’s the best I’ve ever had.
