Food Talk > where to eat in New Haven?

We're meeting friends for dinner in New Haven this weekend. Anyone know of a great place?

What type of food/experience are you looking for? New Haven has excellent and diverse choices from great ethnic restaurants to pizza some claim as the best in the country.

Ethnic: Thali and Thali Too for Indian, Lalibella for Ethiopian, Istanbul Cafe for Turkish, Bentara for Malaysian to name a few favorites. I hear there are some excellent food carts too if you're feeling adventurous.

Pizza: For some, you haven't lived unless you've had New Haven pizza. It's an institution in New Haven (since 1925) and I sort of agree it's one of those things you should try if you're in the city. We travel often to Wooster Street for Frank Pepe's (the original) or Sally's pizza (next door). Warning: There is always a wait at Pepe's no matter what time of day.Our personal favorite and a little further afield is Modern Apizza on State street. Also Bar on Crown street has great pizza and their own brewed beers.

Zinc is a terrific restaurant. Either the cafe or the kitchen. Great scene and great food, modern and casual but upscale. Union League Cafe is well liked. It's a little more old school and formal feeling, but not formal. Carmine Anthony's is a very good traditional steak house. Bespoke has gotten raves from my friends though I have not yet been. Looks lovely. All of the above have websites so you can check them out.

Thanks, everyone. I should have been a bit more specific, huh? We're going to try Bentara. The menu looks terrific!
